Surprise [:O] Sinking Boat.
Reply Quote
Long Story, but I'll try to sum up:

So, I have a older Bayliner Capri and because I was feeling ambitious this morning I decided to get up early and take the boat to work. (I live 2 blocks from the river, and work 2 blocks off the same river but about 7 miles north.)

Here's where the sinking begins... I dropped the boat into the water, docked the boat, parked the trailer and came back to find 3 inches (over the floor boards mind you) of water in the boat. I then realize that I forgot to put the Drain Plug back into the hull!!! Panic ensued! I then had to grab the plug, almost jump into the water and screw it in... the whole time I'm thinking "Don't you dare drop this plug!". Next... No bilge pump in my boat... YET!... so I had to go back, get my trailer, get the boat on the trailer, drain the boat, PUT THE PLUG BACK IN, and then drop it back in the water. Ugh!

Luckily, when I showed up late for work, my boss just thought it was hilarious and started laughing!

Anybody ever completely sink a boat like this?

There was a poor fellow in our marina in Prescott Ontario.  He had the mechanics taking a look at his cooling system on a Friday afternoon.  They finished their work, and by Saturday morning, she was sunk.  All the lines still attached to the dock, but nobody noticed overnight as it must have sunk lower and lower - as the night progressed.  Apparently it's a common error to forget to hook up your cooling lines correctly.  "industry standard" requires double hose clamps for this reason - a quick check count could save hours of frustration and bailing!

I partially sunk a boat when I was a kid. My dad has the tendency of thinking kids can hold a boat while he parks the truck and trailer. He pulled away and the boat started going down. By the time he got back there was about a foot of water in the boat and it took several of us to pull it back in to drain the boat and install the plug. Canoes are so much easier.

That isn't better than the guy just bought his boat and the boat wouldn't plane when under full throttle. He slowly drove the boat to the local marina and when they checked for what was wrong ... the trailer was still firmly attached to the bottom of the boat!!!

Some years ago back in Michigan I hired two high school boys to detail my SeaDoo jet boat.  They were supposed to finish the job, launch the boat and tie it off on a transient dock by 3 PM.

My date and I arrived at the dock but no boat.  Wait, isn't that my pink mooring line leading down into the water?  Uh-oh.  I pulled hard on the pink rope but it was taut and had no give.  Called a marine salvage company and they showed up quick.  A diver dove in and hooked a cable on the front of the boat.  Then a crane winched the whole thing out just like a fish on a hook.  Forensic analysis: yup, no plugs -- the detailing boys had forgotten them.

When I was a teen my older sister married a guy who loved the ocean and who had built several boats over prior years. At that time he had a homemade 20 ft cabin cruiser moored in Santa Monica bay. Santa Monica then had a breakwater with several hundred boat moorings behind it. One saturday my new brother-in-law took me and four of his buddies on a fishing trip. The bilge had accummulated some water, and before he started the single outboard engine, my bro-in-law opened the bilge drain. Then he started the engine, sort-of.....coughing and sputtering. We proceeded to head out from the breakwater at approx 1-2 knots per hour. The boat was overloaded with five adults and one teen. We could not close the drain because my bro-in-law had painted so heavily that it stuck open. The water steadily flowed into the boat thru the drain, and as it did the boat sank lower and went even slower. We had long since cleared the breakwater and were in open ocean when the sputtering engine died. We pried up the deck we were standing on and started bailing water with a coffee can and a bait tackle box. Somehow my bro-in-law got the engine to fire. We gathered speed, bailed water untill the bilge drained, hammered the drain closed and ended up catching the limit that day. That was my last open water fishing trip with my bro-in-law.

Yup! Sank at the dock. Of course the launch area was full of parked trucks and trailers, So my truck was several blocks away. The boat was a bit heavier with water up over the back seat but managed to get her out. Still had 2 girls with bikinis waiting to go out so... of course we went and had a good time. We laughed all afternoon about it. Damn plugs!

Had a boat in our marina that went down becasue they didn't turn off the water. internal hose broke and the 34' steel clipper was bow down on the bottom. glad it wasn't mine!

You ought to see a Bosun's mate striker in dress whites trying to insert a threaded plug into the drain of a 40 foot liberty launch. With the davits already headed up to pick up the next tier.
