'79 CX500D Clutch Problems...
Reply Quote
I am having difficulties with changing gears from neutral to first gear when staring up my CX500. With the clutch lever pulled completely to the handle, when I shift into first, the bike lurches forward and stalls. It is much more noticeable when the bike is cold, but happens as well when warmed up. Also, the friction zone appears to be VERY narrow: the least movement of the clutch lever after starting forward movement makes the bike jump forward. I have been unable to even ride the bike due to this problem.

I am wondering about the clutch cable adjustment. The instructions in my manual are scanty and confusing. Could someone walk me through the details of properly adjusting the clutch cable, and/or help me diagnose the problem?

Thanks a lot: GREAT FORUM!

The clutch cover lever should be near 9 oclock or below. So turn down the two nuts on the cable near the clutch cover till there isn't any slack. Then slack it off a hair so that theirs no tension on the cable. That's basically it.

Make sure both lower nuts are above the engine block mounting point, when I first got my bike the PO had 1 above and 1 below.  When it's adjusted right you should be able to move the lever at least a 1/2 inch without putting any tension on the cable.  The lower nuts are for bigger adjustments and then fine tune it with the barrel adjuster at the bar.

Thanks, both, for your help! I will use these hints tomorrow while adjusting cable. A question comes to mind, though: what if the clutch cover lever is at/above the nine o'clock position?

Then it indicates that the clutch plates are worn and may need replacing but if it were true than the clutch wouldn't engage or would slip easier.

Also if you don't know what oil is in the bike change to the recommended 10w40 cheap mineral oil.I've used 20w50 but it makes the gear box a bit clunky and clutch grab more when cold. The 15w40 made for diesels engines definitely  makes my gear box as slick as snot-off-a-stick probably down to it's higher sheer factor but the bike is good with the 10w40

It could also be cable stretch instead of clutch wear. Check both ends of the clutch cable and see if there are any broken cable strands.

You may also have cable stretch even without any broken strands. There often is some stretch with a new cable and then it quits stretching.
