Geeked [8-|] crash bar identification
Reply Quote
Crash bars, engine guards, case guards, engine bars or whatever you want to call 'em are popular accessories.  They're great for mounting foot pegs, and judging from all the bent and road-rashed ones on that auction site quite a few have done exactly what they were originally designed to do.

Let's try to identify the various ones, both Honda and aftermarket, in this thread.  As far as I know, Honda only made one basic style and it was marketed as a Hondaline accessory.  I don't think bikes came with it installed from the factory but it was a very popular dealer-installed item.

Even though they appear identical at first glance, the various Hondaline guards had subtle differences so they are not always interchangeable.  Here is a Hondaline guard.

Hondaline guards came with this hardware.  The spacers and nuts were installed at the lower front mounting locations and the two bolts were used at the rear mounting location.  The new bolts were slightly longer to account for the thickness of the guards.

[Edit:  The original bolts that came on the CX/GL bike were 10x70 mm, Honda part number 95801-10070-00.  The replacement bolts that came with the Hondaline guards were 10x80 mm, Honda part number 95801-10080-00.  Sorry, I do not know the Honda part number for the spacer.  This edit is in response to a question.]

The fairing mounting brackets, also called cowl stays, complicate interchangeablility of the Hondaline guards.  Here is my understanding of what fits;  if someone knows better please jump in and correct me.

CX500 guards can be used on a GL500 (no fairing), but not a GL500I (with fairing) unless modified.  It would be more difficult to modify them to fit a GL650 or GL650I.

GL500 guards can be installed on a CX500, but not a GL650 or GL650I without modification.

GL650 and CX650 guards are one and the same item.  They will not fit on a CX500 or GL500 without modification.

Since the major incompatibilities are in the area of the cowl stays, this area on the guards is important to be aware of if you're planning to purchase some Hondaline guards.

These photos show some of the differences.  All photos are taken of the right side guard.

The left bracket on the CX500 guard looks much fatter than the GL500 guards.  The second GL500 guard's bracket also has a slight bend.

The GL650 guard's bracket has a sharp bend.

The 650 engines have a greater deck height than the 500 engines due to the larger displacement.  This affects the distance between the mounting holes for the guards.

Markland Industries made several accessories for the Silverwing including engine guards, rear saddlebag guards, heel-toe shifter, floor boards, front fender trim, and the much-desired trunk set-back kit.  This photo was taken from their 1982 sales brochure.

The Markland Industries part number for the engine guard pair is 025001.  This photo shows them prior to installation.

Dam good post.

I can not believe you didn't get ANY responses!

I would really like to see more post like this one. It puts the info out there, before it asked. - A search is easier/faster than waiting for responses.

I don’t need engine guards just now, but if I ever do, the info is right here. Thanks.

There were several other manufacturers of crash bars, including MC Enterprises among others.  Unfortunately I don't know how to identify them and only have limited photos found on the 'net.

Hopefully others can add to this thread by posting photos and text for some of the aftermarket crash bars.

I've seen the short wrap around bars for sale at wemoto.com. 91 pounds and 51 pounds. Don't know what that is in $$ but, with the exchange rate and shipping, it's probably pricey. This is a good post on the engine bars. Thanks. I have the three point bars on my and it looks like they have been needed more than once.

I just placed a crash bar on my GL500I, it came off of my spares GL500I.
Dont have a pic at this time but it looks a wide "U" shape. Bolts to the rad/engine mount then has two flat bars that run under the engine and mount to the front H-box exhaust mount.

I have a set of the stock Hondaline ones, unfortunatley not the shown hardware.
They are not perfect, but usable - can post pic's if anyone is interested in them.
I'm thinking they came off a CX model.
The crash bar on my GL500 was broken and half fell off somewhere, so I am running without and actually prefer it that way, asthetically at least.
I laid my old CX500C over a couple decades ago, amazing how well JB Weld matched up and repaired the valve cover....

I did buy the 51 pound version from wemoto.com. for my 82 GL500I   Exchange rate in Oct 07 was about 2 to 1 - so it was $100.00 ish.   The freight was 5 pounds - or $10.00.   It came via "Royal Post" Air.    From start to finish - it was about 10 days to receive in California.   Would I order from them again - YES!!!      The printing on the packaging for the bars was in German - so I am thinking that wemoto may have ordered the bars for my order.    The 'fasteners' arrived in a separate package earlier than the bars - well packaged for the trip.  The price included whatever duty charges that may have existed as I recall only getting the approx $110.00 charge to my credit card.

Could you possibly post some photos in this thread so we can see what they look like on your bike?

From the wemoto website here are the two versions.

This is the "standard" version for sale at a price of 51 pounds.

This is the "alternative" version for sale at a price of 91 pounds.

If you are asking me..... it was the 'top' image.   Not the one with what appears to be a bar running underneath.  They included two longer bolts for the 'rear' most attachement - near the plastic coolant bottle.  It does make it a bit more difficult to pull the the valve covers.  Taking off the gas tank helps a bit.   The front attachments are slotted, so you can vary the spacing between the cover and the bar.

That's not as pricey as I thought. I do like the lower bars. You could put foot rests on it. I don't know anything about sliders though I've seen them advertised. Are they for crash protection? If so, could they be mounted to the fairing (I guess that's where they normally go) and protect the engine? Just looking for alternatives.

Sture posted this photo in another thread and I copied it so it will also be in this thread.  As he stated, these are the Wemoto big crash bars made by Fehling of Germany.

I've thought about making some, but haven't yet.  They would be real simple to drill and tap from hex stock, only the threads need to be metric, not the hex stock.  Cut the hex stock, drill clear thru and tap, locktite a stud in one end.  Access to a metal lathe would be helpful of course.
