Hi everybody,
I have a 1979 cx500 and I was wondering how much oil is too much oil to put in when doing an oil change. I put in 2.75 quarts and then topped it off with another 4 ounches or so. After I've been riding and i check the oil level, oil comes rushing out of where the dipstick goes. Does that mean there is too much oil in there? Should I let all the extra oil drain out of the dipstick hole after I've been riding? Thanks guys.

there should be a 'hashmarked" region on your dipstick?
The correct oil level is within those hashmarks.

Doesn't matter, just not while running. Don't thread the stick in while checking the level.

Alright. Thanks! One more question. Should I check the oil level while on the center kickstand or on the regular kickstand?

If you drained the oil and added what you said it should not be gushing out! When I have had this happen in the past it was my needle valves. (carbs) It causes the gas to flow right into the oil pan. I recommend you change the oil and see if there is a gasoline mix in it. Smell test usually works.

I did and oil change on my 81 GL500 - I found some tech specs that said 3.2 Quarts of oil. I don't know how similar the engine is.

Rule of thumb on any engine you're unfamiliar with, put in about 15% less than the manual, the sticker or your brother in law says. Then crank it over or start till oil pressure builds. Shut off, let it sit for a while (oil drains down from valve covers etc.) and go by the dipstick to get a correct level. Various manuals and manufacturers list different oil capacities, and some list just one. The CX owners manual lists capacity for what must be a bone dry crate engine, a normal oil/filter change usually takes 1/2 quart less than the manual states. Always go by the dipstick with the engine as level as possible.

I think that's for the 650 engine, I thought the 500 took a little UNDER 3 qts? As to oil level, more is not better, engines run best with the right amount of oil. Overfilling, or even zealously keeping it at the top fill line always will make the engine work harder, taking a little edge off performance and fuel economy. It's a fine point, to be sure, but why not? As was said, the dip stick check is done without screwing in the threads, per the manual. If your checking it hot, give it 2 minutes for the topend oil to drain down into the crankcase.

The Factory manual says: "Fill the engine with 2.5 liters (2.6 U.S. qt) of recommended oil. Stop the engine, make sure that the oil level is at the upper level mark, and there are no oil leaks."
I've never had a CX take more than this in a normal oil change. 3.2 qts. is the engine oil capacity, not necessarily the amount of oil you get out during an oil change.

I ended up using only 2 and most of another quart of oil on mine. It reads full so that's where I left it.

Too much oil? If it doesn't lock right up, it usually ends up being sucked in the crankcase breather system and ends up in the airbox.
Remove the plug on the vent tube under the bike and you will find out where all that extra oil went :)
