rattling noise from engine
Reply Quote
I'm experiencing a rattling sound from 3500 to 4500 rpm, intermittently. Its quiet when the engine is cold .  Oil viscosity does not seem to matter as I have tried   5w20   to   20w50.  I've gone through the cam chain adjustments also.  Could this be a loose water pump impeller?  Maybe the cam chain is stretched beyond adjustment? Although I don't think that is the problem as the bike has only 12,000 miles, or is it possible it has 112 k miles? I'm also experiencing a fluctuation in engine temp.  Sometimes while cruising down the highway at 65 mph the temp is normal then the next time I look it's down towards the cold side.  I recently replaced the thermostat with a new one with hopes to correct this symptom but it's the same as before.

Temps can do that but you may want to try to eliminate any chance of noise. Key rings, loose bolts  and other things can cause a rattle.

I had a bad rattle vibrating noise that really worried me till I found it was a headlight mounting bolt.
Eliminate the obvious before assuming the worst.

Also, sometimes you need to put something behind the edges of the radiator grill to keep it from rattling.

My brother's was bad enough that I thought the fan had broken a fan blade ... a cardboard shim later the rattle was gone.

If your temp is going up THEN back down then the thermostat is working FINE...that's what it's supposed to do...no issue there.

If you only hear the noise at higher speeds and RPMS then wouldn't you guys doubt that it's his cam chain as at the higher RPMS the chain is stretched more and tightens up therefore typically the cam chain noise lessens if it is loose?

It does indeed sound like something is just loose and the higher speed makes it start to move around and rattle.
