Thanks for all the help and replies. I pulled my plugs today and rechecked valve clearances, as far as I can tell my plugs look mostly normal and my valve clearance is good. If I'm using the meter correctly I'm getting no reading on the green wire and about 10.1 on the yellow. I still haven't made a video of the engine running, but I had my wife (who now thinks I'm a lunatic) listen to it as she also listened to the 3 mp3 files on the Elsham site, and she seemed to think it sounded most like the "cold start " engine sounded. I did notice a squeal while riding that went away when I applied brakes, took the caliper off and found the piston boot torn and the metal of the piston was rubbing against the brake pad and shim, so I think I'll get a new piston and boot and rebleed the brakes. I have found that I'm often forgetting to turn the petcock off, is that a bad thing if it stays on overnight? Potential problems? I did my first newbie-bone-head move and drove off with the petcock OFF and stalled right at a stoplight, had to walk it off to the curb like a dope. Live and learn (hopefully!)
