Jerry's most recent check-in was from Appleton, WI.  It looks like he's visiting with David, R80Dave.

Jerry was visiting me. He left about 6:30 I posted two shots on the HTTA site

http://groups.msn.com/HTTAofAmericapicturesite/slimeycrudrally.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=1764

For some reason I couldn't get the JPEGs to the small size ... I got to ride the Burgman while he was here as I was throughly impressed. The handling even with the car tire, the acceleration and the braking was all impressive. Of course I left imprints in the left grip because I gripped it so hard to remember that it was a brake and not the clutch.

We had to plan carefully for him to get home without detours because of the flooding. The last two days were the only dry days of his entire trip.I sure hope his remaining 2-3 days are nice ones.

Looks like they made it about 482 kilometers up the Trans Canada Highway. What the heck is a Kilometer anyway? You wierdo EuroCanadians have a strange way of figuring distance. What is wrong with a good old mile. It is 5280 feet afterall, just eight simple furlongs.

Don & I are OK, all is going well. Will check in again tomorrow.SPOT Check OK.

I know what route Jerry took ... so he went 677 miles plus or minus a few miles.

I will say though that he was mostly on super slab today and that Burgman is so-o-o-o smooth and fast!

Yeah. When Canada went metric I had a hard time getting used to it. I had to learn that when you figure things out by counting on your fingers you use your thumbs too.

But it is a lot easier to multiply by 10 every time than  it is to remember whether you multiply by 2, 4 or 8 in each case and temperatures make a lot more sense when 0 is freezing.

BTW: Does anyone know how long they're intending to stay in Alaska? At the rate they are going they will be here in another week and a half if they travel everyday...

Geee. I didn't expect all the interest. Thanks for support guys.

As Dave W. said, I put in 680 miles the day I left his place. It would have been more but for the atrocious shape of Illinois and Kentucky Interstates (at least the ones I rode on) and the incredible delays coincident with the various projects. Worst of the whole trip in that regard.

The Burgman performed beyond my expectations and proved adapatable to dirt, gravel, mud, train, snow, sleet, slush, high winds, frost heaves and fractured roadways. I'll try to put my notes and picures together over the next month or so. For now, I'm following Gene and Don!

Jerry, this is Gene, logged in using Don's id.  Tonight, Monday June 23, we are in Watson Lake, YT.  Last night I was able to send a number of emails but did not send you one as I didn't know you were already home!  If you contact Jason Farley he may be able to forward my Spots to you.  The gps folded on me yesterday but I got it running again last night and it worked OK today.  The weather was good today until about 100 miles from Watson Lake and the rain set in.  We decided to stay tonight in a motel and are in an expensive dump called the Gateway, don't stay here!

Overall the trip is going well.  We made the Badlands, skipped Yellowsstone, made a 2 day stop at Kamloops.  Pete Smith, owner of Side Effects, made a change in the location where the steering damper was connected.  Made a BIG differfence in the steering of the hack!  We are still going through Dawson City, YT to pick up our t shirts from Downtown Dick, owner of the hotel.  I guess you could say we are now in our "As the Wind Blows" mode.  We get up and go as far as we feel like and then either camp or get a motel.  Of course, we will try not to do too many of the motel nights, especially this far north, it is very expensive.

The STMMH is mud from end to end.  As we reach more level roads our mileage has picked up. Don't know when we will get a chance to clean it up, long as it keeps running is the main thing.  It was good to hear how well the Burg did and how good your trip went.  As you can see if we did a 300 mile day that would be the same as your 650 day, we are simply slow, but we will get there in our own good time.  We do make a lot of stops for pictures.

Will try to post again later.

Gene

That's funny.  They were in the Black Hills same time I was.  Lucky they are on bikes though.  Beautiful country out there.  Well worth the trip if anyone ever gets the chance.  Might be one of the best rides you ever find.  The roads are hilly, curvy, through forests, by waterfalls...  It really is beautiful.  I'd discourage going during Sturgis week when the towns are packed, unless that's what you like.  There are always lots of bikers out there, but other times of the year/summer are more fruitful for being a tourist than that week.

Have a great ride you two.  Keep safe!  Might as well catch a plane over to Russia and ride from there to England, eh?

But really, our prayers are with you!

I Spoke with Gene and Don via telephone this afternoon at about Noon Central Time, 10am Pacific. Gene called me to check on a possible solution to a problem with the wireless card I loaned them. They were having a driver or software issue.

They were in Valdez Alaska in the motel making some plans and sorting out the wireless issue. They decided to skip the Ferry due to cost and just take the Highway back to Anchorage today. Gene said they may only make it to Palmer due to the late start on the day. Due to the extra time on the road from skipping the ferry they may skip some or part of the peninsula.

The trip is going great with little to know problems. Both gentlemen sounded to be having the time of their lives and commented on how amazing it all is. They did state it was a bit cold. 32 degrees Yesterday morning with a heat wave this morning with temps in the low 40's.

They have had two minor problems. Their cooler was stolen overnight in from the parking log of a motel. There were also two or three other coolers stolen off of other motorcycles at the motel which was apparently full of moto travelers. The lowlife got a few bottle of water, some apples, and some milk. The travelers replaced the cooler soon after.

They other minor problem was the battery powered fluid transfer pump only worked once or twice. They were using this to transfer fuel from the aux tank on the trailer to the ST's tank. I imagine that the fuel destroyed some gasket or seal in the pump. They are planning on picking up a simple hand siphon pump in Anchorage from Walmart.

The rig is apparently doing great other than the poor fuel consumption in headwinds and such. They say hello to all of those following their journey.

One thing for sure ... from the looks of those pictures, Gene won't be riding a pristine rig when he gets to the Amish Rally!!!

It does look very nice though. I sure hope they are having a great time.
