I understand where your coming from. I'm a new rider/bike owner. It seems I feel the same worries. I get a little leery at speeds over 55. My biggest fear is a deer running out, I've hit three deer in the past 2 years.

My 2 cents worth !!
1) In my early biking days i was told by a very learned dear old gentleman " YOU be the master of the machine. Don't let the machine be the master of YOU."
2) They're all idiots out there, so "think of the unexpected"
3) Always give yourself an "OUT"(an option of avoidance).
Just get out there and ride :)

Been there, doing that. When I was a noob rider on a pretty clapped-out 10 year old bike, I built up my confidence slowly - trips to towns 30 miles away, then 50, then day trips 100 miles out. I had a riding buddy, and that helped a lot.
Another thing that helped was a windshield. It both reduces fatigue and that feeling of going insanely fast at 50 MPH. I put a lot of miles on that bike after putting the windshield on it. I'm currently debating what I should put on the new to me CX500 classic.

This post reminds me of something I saw on the website of a wheelie school somewhere in California. They offer classes to teach you how to do wheelies, that's their gig.
Among all the other information published on the site, about the school, location, class times contact info, instructor bios etc is a FAQ.
An item in the FAQ is:
Is it safe ?
The answer:
Don't be silly, we are talking about motorcycles in extreme situations, of course it isn't "safe".
The point is, danger comes with the territory, adrenaline is the rush. You have to decide, ride or don't ride, no one can give you any more assurance than you already have or don't have.
Ride it or park it and spare the bandwidth.
Tough love, sorry.

I found mine in a garage dented, carbs off, flat tire, cause they are dry rotted, wires cut, should I go on? No, it was a mess. 7,000 miles later, lets just say, it is a ugly bike but I am proud to put it next to any ones and take it any where. Of course they were ugly to me the frist time I saw them in 79. Gees I am getting old. Cx 500c and away!!!!!
cx 500 c 81 It's my Ugly and I'll ride it if I want to, ride if I want to, you would ride to if you had an Ugly to.
