Thanks for bringing me into the light Tom - I didn't think it was that bad - hopefully you can get a good deal on a parts bike or motor ..... Aye, the oil filter uses a short spring and flat washer to hold it in place ........ otherwise, I'm still thinking about adding 3 gauges to my cluster - (oil pressure, water temp & charging meter) - but before I do, need some input - as the one's I have are small, ( 1 1/2" dia.) -  but made for a car - whereas the oil pressure works off a thin hose, and don't know where I should connect it on the bike ? ..... similarly the charging voltmeter has a 8 gauge wire (to ???) ..... and wonder if the wiring for the original water temp will work on the other gauge ???

Cheers, n' Take care ..... I'll be keeping an eye open for another motor for you !!!!

Bryan

I don't think that would do much except for not filter the oil. How ever, if there was some piece of debris sitting in an oil passage some where, a part of a gasket or carbon...etc. from scraping the gaskets or cleaning, It would not have been filtered out. It would have just pumped it back through the system. The first place the oil gets delivered is to the crank shaft bearings. It could have found the passage, plugged it up and starved the crank for oil. The remainder of the flow would have gone as usual to the top end, explaining why you were able to see oil flow from the rocker arms.
It's just a theory, but I bet if you pressed out the main bearing, you would find stuff behind it plugging the oil holes. Since your not rebuilding it, it would be interesting to find out what was behind it. Did it burn the mains too, or just the rods?

Locked up - and tearing up.  The support you guys have shown towards a member of this forum brings a tear to my eye.  I know I wouldn't get that much support from the people I work with 5 days a week!  I'm impressed and the sincerity of the members here.

Seems like just the rods. I will try to get some pics and post them of some of this stuff. Maybe the dissection of this motor will help somebody else in the future. It is really cool how they come apart. I will also investigate further this week end.

As a relative new comer to the forum, I have already received tons of help from fellow members..  Seeing the outpouring of support here is pretty cool.  I rarely visit the Customization section as I'm still working on my 81 Custom restoration.. After it is mechanically sound, I hope to convert it to a Deluxe Cafe style bike.

Today I was pointed to this thread by LRCXed who was aware of my recent good fortune:   I just picked up 3 CX500 engines + parts on EBAY for $58!!!  (yeah, I'm still pinching myself).  You're welcome to have one of the engines for the cost of shipping (from CA).  Thats the good part... The bad part is that I have no year/make/model/mileage information on any of the engines.  Actually thats kind of a lie..  I found a speedo with ~65k miles on it and a VIN tag for a 1979 in one of the parts boxes - its anyones guess which engine it came from. I literally just picked them up yesterday and haven't even tried to turn them over..  They could all be basket cases...  Wanna take a chance?

Let me know..

Paul

I was watching that auction but I knew it was a waste of time for me because I think it said pick up only. Glad someone got a good deal.

I saw that auction too.  Someone just sold one engine here on the east coast (in PA) for $61, so you did good getting all 3 for $58!

That is pretty awesome,Thank-you, I am still looking for one around here. I did not make it to the salvage yard Sat. like I had planned. It was pouring the rain and it was several miles out of the way, but still a good ride. The local bike night was pretty cool, never been to one. My ol' buncha junk would have been a big hit. Nothing there even remotely like it. I still plan on posting a few motor  pics.

Well if your patience runs thin looking for a engine locally, they'll be here...  I didn't plan on touching this stuff till after my bike was complete... At the rate I'm going, that'll be about 3 years!!  So you got some time to decide..  I've never shipped something this size, so cost could be prohibitive..  Could also just send the bottom end?

I don't know how far you are willing to drive but I've got a 79' motor sitting here on my front porch. I pulled it to change the water pump seal and found out that there is a grove in the cam where the water/oil seal rides. You might be able to put your top end in it and ride. The engine has 35000 miles on it. I'll take what ever you think is fare for it. May even be willing to do some part swapping.

Haven't heard from you lately Tom - what's up ????  Mine's running fine and put in 300 seashore miles this week so far - so decided to tighten up some bolts tonight n' heads took another 1/4 turn, along with buying a new feeler guage, brought the tappets near par, hence: a lot less tappin' ...... otherwise, helping another buddy get his '85 Shadow back on the road (maybe tomorrow? ) ...... n' again, wished we were closer as also checking out a new 650 rigid frame n' springer forks for this coming winter project <grin> ...... anyway, hope all is well with you and your wife, n' please keep us informed when you get a chance ...... you probably saw these somewhere online already, but if not - it's a link to my most favorite afternoon or evening seashore rides .... that I've previously talked about

Cheers, my friend n' don't hestitate to call anytime for whatever ?!!!.....

Bryan, Glad to hear you are well. Beautiful scenery, where's the nude beach? I still check the board several times a day and comment when I can. My motor is still on the bench, haven't had the heart to fool with it. I was saying lastnight I need to get it cleaned up and get it all put in a storage bin (alot of good/spare motor parts there), I will need them as I WILL replace my motor one of these days, and it is good to have spare parts. Maybe I will get that done this weekend and post some pics of the damaged parts. Still riding the Shadow every day to work, saving a ton in gas money. I can fill it up for $11-$12.00 and ride all week as apposed to 40.00 in my car. Good to hear from you Bryan, enjoy the "new" bike.

Good to hear back from you Tom ..... n' Always good to have spare motor parts handy - in fact, I wouldn't mind a few spare motors kickin' around here, but they all seem to be in the U.S. n' shipping costs too much - speaking of which, I finally found the parts needed for my ol' car online (rear brake shoes, n' rear shocks) of which only cost $50 .... but they want $150. to ship from Michigan to Halifax ????  So guess, my ol' car will sit in the driveway till I can find a better deal, and gas prices come down - so it'll probably rust out by then eh !!!!  ......  anyway, the weather hasn't decided what it will bring today (cloud, rain, lightnin', thunder, n' high winds, are in the forecast) - yet right now the sun is shinin' - so don't think I'll be going too much further than the corner store - as weather can change here every 10 minutes  ...... . Aye, take your time and pick out the good motor parts - as you never know, just maybe someone will trade you a whole motor for a couple good pieces ???  In the meantime keep ridin' n' last but not least - the nude beach is the third one over at Crystal Crescent ..... first two have parking lots, the third is a mile walk into the next cove so not in the online pictures ......

Cheers, n' Happy Trails Ahead,

Bryan

Kinda hard to see the pics - but believe ya - seen worse on e-bay n' many bids ...... so you did narrow it down to oil starvation (loose oil chain?) ..... or (plugged oil pump?) - or ?????  Rahter interested to find out the cause over the matter - as could help out in the long run for many ......  Otherwise, did I mention - I really like your Shadow <LOL> ....... damn, I'd be proud to ride that !!!!!

Cheers, n' Happy Trails my friend,

Bryan

Bryan, click on the pics and they get really big. Still don't know why everything went south. Just know they did. The bike's speedo was broken at 30,000 miles when I got it 15 yrs. ago. I only rode it 5 of the 15 yrs that I had it. I rode it the first 4 yrs, then it sat for 10 yrs, then I chopped it and rode it for a year with the weep hole leaking. Should not have been mileage that killed it although I always abused this bike wayyy bad. It is the bike I learned to ride on.
The shadow is alright it just has no character where I havn't customized anything on it yet.

Thanks for the tip on enlargin' - works n' agree parts are fried ...... yet oil outta the hole only means your piston rings, valve seals, or ya have some tattered bearings ..... so should have given you an indication to check it out ?????  Not gonna get up your arse just yet, but you know what I'm talking about ..... otherwise, did I tell you that I really, really like your Shadow <LOL> ..... truly it's a nice ride, albeit not your chop ..... otherwise, on a caring note: your thumb nail shows signs of heart problems ( I should know) - as white streaks have almost consumed mine - so - go get it checked out my friend ....... your way too young to have heart problems .....

Cheers, n' Happy Trails  Ahead,

Bryan

Ok I am curious Bryan
How do you know the thumb is related to heart problems. I see the lines yet I am still confused.
I second really liking the shadow. I'll take one in black. That's the bike I have been wanting to get since I started riding. It may look like it lacks character compared to the other one but with a little modification who knows what it could look like.

My cousin's husband is willin' his 85 Shadow to me - if I promise not to paint the chrome  <big grin as he's 10 years younger) - but also really like what he's done to it - hence: somewhat similar to your chop Tom .... albeit: kept the Shadow tank, he lowered the back a couple inches, added a wide back spoked tire n' wide cut-off fender ..... added chrome Harley light, single custom seat, n' billet signals ....... so once we get it outta hi 3rd floor apartment living room <LOL> ..... I'll take some pics on our travels together this summer !!!

Cheers, n' Happy Tails <grin>  meant trails but a nice tail once in a while wouldn't kill me - er would it ???
