Well, I feel stupid.  The problem with no power was found when I went to put on the blade fuse holder and saw that the two wires were completely disconnected from each other.  I reattached them, turned the key and wahlah, it started right up.

Last week I received some replacement coils from Rich, so I installed them then, even though the bike gave me nothing back, until I found the wire disconnect.  I also found that my inline filter was clogged with junk, so I replaced it, along with the short tube to it.

I then took the bike out for a 15 minute ride at 70 mph and it rode perfectly.  It has never done so well.  It stalled on me the next day when I drove it 3 blocks to work (just wanted to drive it), but I think that was mostly user-error.  I tend to let off the throttle completely when lowering gears to slow down...and this is what seems to cause my bike to quit on me, when it's not warmed up.  After being warmed up it drives fine without clutch and idles at a perfect 1100-1200.

I checked the battery after charging it up fully and with the bike idling.  It still reads only 12.2 volts.  But when I drove it out to the interstate and back (that 15 minute ride at 70mph) I checked it idling when I got back and it showed 12.2 volts.  If it's not changing at all, would I be able to postpone the stator change?  I'll keep a close watch on it, but I'm thinking maybe only 1/3 of the stator is failing.

Thank you all for the help.  I found that electrical disconnection on my birthday, the 18th.  What a great present!

It's better to find it was something simple and feel stupid than to find it more and more complicated and still feel stupid.    Glad you found it.

I'd be interested in your old coils for dissection, if they're otherwise getting tossed.  I'll pay shipping.

Leave about 1/4 choke until the temp gauge starts to move, or until you're onto an open road with no stops.

Check the battery voltage while revving the engine.  The voltage should increase with engine speed.

I'd be glad to send them to you. Send me an email and we'll get things figured out.

Gotfalls,

I sent an email last week.  I've found that sometimes the emails sent through the forum links get blocked somewhere in transit, so maybe you didn't see it.  Try me at randall(dot)temple(at)bigfoot(dot)com.

When you send the dead coils, try Speedee Delivery.  They serve the upper mid-west, and have surprisingly low rates.

Thanks,

R

Hey Randall, sorry for the delay.  I haven't had any time to do anything this week and didn't get your email until last night, before I left for a camping trip, so I haven't had a chance to send those to you.  As soon as I get them sent I'll send you a message.  It might be tomorrow or Monday.

By the way, my bike is running like a dream!  I took it on the longest drive I've done yet at 65 mph and back for an overnight camping trip.  It didn't backfire or lose any power the whole time.  The only issue I found is the squeaky front brakes...  Man do I love my bike!  Thank you all very much for the help here.  I'm going to keep checking the battery to make sure it's staying charged, but ride it as often as I can.  When the cold comes around I'll replace the stator and paint it.

No hurry.  I was just concerned that my message had drifted off into the ether, and disappeared.

Glad to hear it.  If my extractors show up this week, I hope to do LRCXed's newly discovered slow air jet service (and when I screw it up, scramble to get my spare carbs cleaned up and installed) in time for dccoleman's ride out of Rochester next Saturday.  Any chance you'll make it?
