Over heat Problem on CX500 82 model
Reply Quote

Hi all, just new to this board, so I'm looking for a little help. I purchased this bike of a fellow in Sydney Austrlalia about 3 weeks ago, when I took it for a ride the temp gauge went from cold to boiling within 3 minutes. After I took it for a ride I asked him what the go was with it, he replied "that it has never work properly" even after a 10 minute ride the bike didn't feel to bad.

Last weekend it was starting to bug me, so I emptied all the coolant, took of the radiator and flushed it all out, even put a new thermostat in it, put it all back togther...and the same problem.

The old coolant looked to be fine, but didn't know whether the old thermostat worked or not, so I just replaced it.

I don't (or hope) think that it isn't the water pump, as the bike seems OK over a 30 minute ride...but how can I be sure. Would the coolant get to a boiling point if the pump wasn't working correctly or the bike overheating? Is there another way to test that the pump is working (without pulling it all to bits) or would it be safe to run without a thermostat in it?

Any advise would be great.

Probably a bad regulator.
See this thread.

As Harold said, it sounds like your 7-volt regulator is blown.  The temperature gauge operates on seven volts, and a blown regulator sends 12 volts to the gauge - which looks then like you're overheating.  If you're really overheating, you'll push coolant into the reservoir bottle and then out the overflow hose.

If the waterpipe on the left side of the engine gets hot, the pump is working and the 'stat (if installed) is open.  The pipe only sees hot water if there is circulation through the radiator.

I'm currently running with no thermostat.  The thermostat slows down the cooling, so the engine will warm up faster in cool weather.  Not having a 'stat will never make the engine run hotter, but if it can't get up to the design temp you'll possibly loose a few MPG.
