Wow, 70MPG CX.

No wonder it's so expensive, it has that elusive 70MPG carb setup that accidentally left the factory.

I e-mailed this idjit, this was his response.

"You are probably thinking of the CX650 which is also the GL models. Those models get 45 to 50 miles to the gallon. With proper driving I can get very close to 70 miles to the gallon on my CX500 after a few tweaks and the right fuel. I have a  rare CX650 Custom and it does get about 55 to 60 miles to the gallon."

to which I responded,
"Yeah, it'll get 70 miles per gallon, if by "proper driving" you mean 35 miles per hour in fifth gear going downhill with a 40 mile per hour tail wind . . .
"Incidentally, I have a GL650, a CX650 custom, a 1981 CX500 Deluxe, and two 1982 CX500 turbos.  None of them get anywhere near 70 mpg.
"My mechanic is a 1979 CX500 owner himself, and best he ever got was 50.
". . . . and there are a whole lot of CX500 owners on the CX500 forums who think that you are completely full of crap.
Best anyone on our forums has ever got was 55 IMPERIAL gallons.  So either you are outright full of baloney (balogna if you prefer), or the 70 miles per gallon is under extremely rare conditions, much like the conditions that I have described above."

Two CX500 Turbos, GL650I, CX650C, CX650E.

Why do I own five bikes? Because I'm not married. DUH! (and I haven't taken a vacation in two years. . . . )

It's worth every penny.  As stated in the first post, this HAS to be that bike we've all heard about that got fitted with the gas saver carb for testing.  Shortly thereafter the big, evil oil companies bought the patent and destroyed all the carbs, EXCEPT for these!  They're worth millions, millions I tell you.   I suspect the carbs on this bike have been detuned, they will get 150MPG+ if you remove the resistrictor plug hidden under the Kebbler Pin.

As soon as I receive my $123,432,000.25 from my Nigerian business "partner", I'm buying this bike for full asking and making clones of the carb setup.  If my Nigerian funds don't arrive in time, it's all good, I can fund the venture with the winnings from the UK, Dutch, and European Union lotteries I won last week, or that fat check ole Billy Gates put in the mail cause I won the Microsoft Email lottery too.

To think, I can finally make those last loan payments, and the Brooklyn Bridge will be all mine!  TimD et.al, oh yea of little faith, laugh now, for later I will be the only one laughing...all the way to the bank.

Please reply if you don't get this message.

Most expensive used bike I saw e-bayed was about 2 months ago.  It was a 1979 CBX - it auctioned for about $22,000.00 ($22K).  Really nice looking bike, with under 1000 miles (yes, 1k) Wish I had kept some of the pics that were posted.  - eitherway, I'm quite sure it wouldn't get 70 mpg US or imperial either - after all 6 cylinders = 6 carbs etc.

Wow, these rarities are coming out for spring.  This thing has those ultra-rare Mexican option, the "MAGNITOS."  Doesn't run, "most" of the wiring is there, awesome find.  If it's worth $30k not running, get her running and sell on FleaBay for $60k.

70 mpg eh? So is everywhere downhill in Boston or do the US models have pedals fitted? :-)  Seen here recently on flea bay a cx with 6 speeds, just recently had new chain and sprockets  !!!

Sometimes you just wonder if these people actually own the bike they are selling.

Hell you preach, mine has a turbocharged wankel with a 400HP NOS Bigshot.
Redlines at 20,000 rpm, it does.

For all you disbelievers, my GL500I gave two tanksfull at 67 MPG and one tankfull at 69MPG on my recent 3900km trip to our VJMC meeting  - I also won the "longest travelled, ridden" award.  This was with all camping-out gear, and 12 days of clothing changes.

Before you reach for the keyboard to "beat me over the head" with, remember our gallon is 4.536 litres, and the USA "gallon" is 3.8 litres, so, in your terms, I didn't quite do as well as the heading.

My CX gets about 50mpg, and that is with the fairing and lowers and bags installed. My ST1100 got about 55mpg on the highway, when the roads got twisty.....well the milage went down. I don't know about you'all but I have a tendency to short shift the CX on level terrain. Sure I spin the motor in hilly terrain but not on the level stuff. My CB350 four gets 38mpg on a good day. I was told that this was caused by the enormous internal friction losses on that vintage engine. My DL1000 gets about 60mpg when I short shift it, About 40mpg otherwise.

Maybe the "new chain and sprockets are connected to new "bicycle" pedals that you work with your feet to get to that 70MPG figure.

Gee........this weekend, the local HD dealer ran an ad saying the Sportster got 70 MPG.  I usually got 55MPG on my '82 GLi.
