Lifting up the front end

To lift the front to pull the forks, is it best to put a block of wood in front of the oil pan with a jack? Doesn't look like on the oil pan is the best place.

Ron, That's exactly right - and put a tie around the oil cooler/pan, just to keep that block of wood from moving forward while you're working on the front-end, or whatever.

If it's going to be a while off the ground, have someone press down on the back to get the wheel up, then slip an old car wheel under the bike, shore it up with something wide to not concentrate too much pressure in one place.

You should shore it up with something anyway, never trust a hydraulic jack, even if it's brand new.  Should the jack come down, or someone bump the handle etc. the bike is thrown off balance and can fall over.
1978 CX500 - I live on a one-way street that's also a dead end. I'm not sure how I got here, or how I'm going to get out.
