Having trouble shifting to 2nd
Reply Quote
i finished building an engine from a CX500 into my Silverwing interstate about a week ago.I've done 430km on it.this morning on my way to work I started having trouble shifting from 1st to 2nd gear. There aren't any noises or scratching noises so i don't think its a transmission problem. If eventually i get it into 2nd it goes through the rest of the gears no problem, even shifts down to 1st no problem. Does anyone have an idea what it could be? Might it be something with the clutch?

heres a wild guess

I doubt its clutch as this usually manifests in gettin them into 1st gear
As its recently been put together..............
how about
As 1st to 2nd needs a longer upshift movement then say 2-3 3-4 4-5 etc
try removnig the gear change and refiting it angled  bit further downwards?
Quick and easy to do and if that fixes it, your sorted.
If it doesnt, I'd say its a real transmission problem

you wouldnt be the first to have  mislaligned a gearchange  pedal BTW

Oh well, worth a try I suppose
If the clutch is Ok and the gearchange has full travel then
I'd have to guess its a selector problem ?
My only experience with a G/box was dropping all the innards on on the floor
once.
Hopefully someone will chime in with
"Aha ! that happened to me, it was the....................."
Good luck with it

MMMM,
Just my 2cents/pennies worth !!!!!!
I had problems with my 82 GL 500i at the end of last years biking season, as it was "clunking" and hard to shift from 1st to 2nd only.
I adjusted the clutch cabe repeatedly but to no avail !!!!!
I thought for sure it was a clutch or gearbox problem.
But me being a cheap so and so, i replaced the clutch cable 1st.
Problem solved :)
I hope yours is a simple fix like mine

hi."reg in Bristol" said that i should have a look at the shifter lever. I repluied that it wasn't that, which in fact it was.I had a spare lever which i fitted. Now its shifting like normal.the old lever was hitting the casing and at the angle i looked at it i couldn't see it. (sorry 'bout that reg).

As a sidenote:

One of my CXs started getting hard to get into 1st gear.It was the lever catching on the chrome exhaust guard!

Don't know if this is relevant but I always know when my oil is getting low because it gets hard to shift into second gear. When it first starts happening, I'm about two cups low. It was this way when I used dino oil and is still happening now that I've switched to synthetic.
