clunking banging and binding
|

So my bike is broken... again. BUT! This time it's not engine related. Now when it gets a bit warm, the drivetrain starts to bind up and makes all kinds of noise... I took apart the back of it today, and the final drive seems ok... I'm thinking it's more of the U joint by the engine....
How do I get the rear suspension arm off? Any other ideas suggestions?
Thanks!

You remove the swingarm pivot pins. Don't you have a manual yet?

KBD, You're in need of a four-peg socket spanner (larger than the clutch-nut job) to release the LH swing-arm pin. From memory, it's the same size as is needed for a GL500's swingarm. DO NOT use a chisel to loosen this nut. You need it in good shape for re-torqueing the nut when re-assembling.

Sorry, that last post was from me - cleared out my "cookies" prior to doing a Spamfighter scan (to shorten the initial scan time) - and forgot to log back in.

I do have a manual... the question more should have been what do I loosen/where do I get said tool. I have some 4 pin sockety things for wheel bearings, but nothing quite that small...

No worries, there are presently four CX500 turbo drive shafts on e-bay ranging from $49.99 from reasonable two sellers to $200.00 from that idiot who thinks the parts are platinum coated.
Two '82 Turbos, GL650I, CX650C
Why do I own four bikes? Because I'm not married. DUH!

KBD, The shaft is the same as on a CX500EC (though it has a different part number cast on it), and is probably the same as from a GL500 and GL500I (as they have the same engine mounting position relative to the swing-arm pivot position).
It is NOT the same as for any of the twin-shock models.
The Turbo, CX500EC and GL500I all have 16" dimension from the swingarm pivot-centre to rear-drive mounting face, so the drive-shaft should be the same length. The end fittings are identical, too.

Isn't it possable to pull back the rubber boot and take out the lock bolt/pin. then pull the differental and take the drive shaft/u-joint out that way?
I never tried it, every thime I have pulled a shaft, I have already had the motor out.

No, the u/j won't pass down the swingarm tube.

well.. I fixed it... the one trip to the repair shop bites me again... I had the stator done a while back... and after getting it back the third time and riding it around, the driveshaft fell off the back of the engine... I called and yelled, and made a new bolt. Well, I found the old one today.

All is well though, bike once again drivable.
