From the guy who brought you Westward Distraction 07 and who will bring you Alaskan Distraction 08 (whether you want it or not) comes....
Eastward Distraction 08!!
Follow along as this bum takes the summer off from school and travels the United States and that other country to the north, whatever it is - in search of.... umm... (I'll figure it out later)

Thom had emailed me he is having bike problems and hasn't figured out yet what is wrong. Hopefully he will be posting that it was a minor problem.

Aright I'm back (kinda)
As R80Dave said, I've been having bike issues in the rain. Basically it's not carb boot, coil, vacuum or fuel related. I think it may be the two connections coming out of the back of the engine block that may be shorting out.
Either way, stay tuned for what tomorrow brings, in the mean time, enjoy:

Ron - I can't tell you how much I would have appreciated using your shop to do my bike work, but I didn't get your email/post until we were in Ohio. Plus I wouldn't want to burden you too long :) If I make it back up, I'll have to try and stop by.
Thanks again!

Day Nine - that's it for now.
I'm in MN solving the water problem. I hope to be back on the road ASAP and off to Key West. My Alaska plans are still up in the air, but that's the way I like it! Flying by the seat of my riding pants!
Feel free to comment! I'll post here when Eastward Distraction - Part II gets underway.

Well, the bike is fixed (hopefully)!!! I believe it was the "y" part of the carb set up, after the airbox and before the carbs. ???
So... it's on with PART TWO!!!!

Hi Thom.....
Glad to see your "On the Road Again"
This week/weekend is "back to the 50's" at the State Fair Grounds (so my son tells me). That could be the reason for all the old cars you saw.
Stay dry, ride safe...I look forward to your trip updates

Dave,
Minor issues??? It looks like you had everything off but the motor??? What was going on? Was it still missing when wet???
Please let us know.
Thom,
I went riding with Tommy tonight. Your tires are ready for you when you want them. Be safe, have fun. See you next week???

Not to worry, it wasn't nearly as involved as it looks.
The fairing, fuel tank, and exhaust were removed because the tach cable had broken. The disassembly was not a big deal at all, especially given there were two of us working on it who have been through it multiple times.
The steel wire portion of the sidestand had broken off. While the exhaust was off we installed a replacement from a parts bike after making a minor repair to it first. Both sidestands were a little loose because the mating frame metal has worn down.
The carbs had not been checked in quite a while so we pulled them and did a quick inspection and cleanup with spray carburetor cleaner. There were some carbon deposits around the pistons but the float bowls were clean. The air cut-off that was accessible without separating the carbs was checked and we discovered the diaphragm was cracked. Although the bike ran well, Thom plans to do a carb rebuild after returning home.
Thom had been having some trouble with it cutting out in the rain, so after we did this work we started the bike and thoroughly soaked everything with a garden hose. The problem could not be duplicated. I don't know if we somehow fixed it with the carb work or if it's an intermittent problem that will recur.
We also replaced a few minor bits and pieces here and there.
So nothing major at all, just a few minor things.
