2008 HTTA Amish Rally Aug. 14 - 17

PWG in Lowgap NC 05-25-2008, 3:10 AM

This year I will be arriving from Dixie and I will be accompanied by a couple native Tarheel's  Don't ask me how that title came about, I don't know.

Folks, I have been told many times: The success of any event depends on how much you promote it.  Be aware that as of today, you are going to be seeing daily promotions to our 2008 Amish Rally.  It has been the most successful, enjoyable and inexpensive rally ever.  We have the use of a large camp/lodge in a Pennsylvania countryside setting for only $6.00 per person per night.  80 gallons of hot water, two bathrooms, four showers, two kitchens fully supplied with cookware and dinnerware. Upstairs and downstairs porches for bull sessions, even clean linen and blankets.  Did I mention, all this for a mere $6.00 per night per person??? I forget, downstairs also has a large living room.  Sorry, no TV.  Ask anyone who has been there.

How about I host a HTTA Blue Ridge Rally in my back yard in July?  Free tent sights, fire-pit, indoor shower and toilet (closed after bedtime)  Great mountain twisties and Blueridge Parkway tours.  Truckstop food down the road.  Let's hear it?

Gene, I get the impression that the only formal toilet is rather close to Phil's bedroom - maybe there's a lemon-tree within walking distance outside, and Phil could supply one of those manual post-hole borers/augers for midnighters.

Reminds me of my first camping trip as a Boyscout. Forgot toilet paper and my pack shovel. The Scoutmaster made me use leaves and my hands to dig a hole the first time. Never forgot that stuff again. At least I knew what poison sumac and ivy looked like!

Funny you should ask. Knee has steadily been getting worse. Played golf Thru. (stupid, but being stupid is how I got a bad knee in the first place) and it totally went out on me. Nothing sudden, just steadliy got more painful until I couldn't walk. Wasted the weekend just laying around. This was the weekend I was going to put the 650 back together and light it off. Crap. Calling the doc in a few minutes for appt. Bottom line is the replacement may be moved up which screws up all my travel plans this summer. Maybe if he drains it and gives me some heavy duty drugs I can hold out 'till November. We'll see. Thanks for asking.

Rich, from your comment I am assuming you are planning on making VMT this year.  If you do and you make contact with Jon please bring him up to date on what I am now riding and let him know I am planning to make VMD in 09, at least on 3 wheels I won't fall over in the mud!

It would be nice to see Jon again.  One of the reasons I'm going this year is the Triumph marque.  Who doesn't have a soft spot in their heart for classic Triumphs?  Probably will not go in '09, maybe every other or third year.  I've been twice and enjoyed it immensely, it's a great event for us "vintage" bikers.

Jon of Ohio, "manufacturer" of the trunk extenders a few years back.  Had a GL500, now a GW rider.  Fed Dave and I (the only HTTA riders that showed up that year) like kings a couple of years back at VMD.  A fine man, but his feelings got hurt.

Nah, I only work weekends, so if I take one weekend off that equals a little under 2 weeks of off-time.  Thanks for posting the date!

PWG in Lowgap NC 06-09-2008, 4:02 AM
There is no process.  Show up.  If you get there during the day when no one is there, and for obvious reasons the camp is locked, there is an upstairs porch with furniture to relax on.  We always return to camp to clean up before going out for dinner.

Hey, PWG;

Oh, you're WAY down there by the border; I'm in the Blue Ridge mountains in central Virginia, although I do have a trip to the Gap on my To-Do list.

The Amish Rally sounds like it might be do-able, but I'm trying to find out some more info on it, the where's and when's etc. PA is about a 4 hour drive north for me. It'd be very cool to meet up with all these CXers...

Ok Phil, since everyone seems to be making plans to come to the RALLY, where do we find info on the camp? Is there an address we can load into our GPS's, or directions from a local Yoakal,"take a left at xyz then a right at the old Johnson place..."? I just looked on the HTTA MSN Group page but there was no info on this years Rally.

From North and Northeast

From the northeastern and northern parts of Pa, exit I-80 using exit 210 to Rte 15 southbound to West Milton, Pa., and exit onto Rte 642 west. At the end of the ramp go left. Go about 4 miles through Kelly Crossroads (a rural road crossover and a few houses) and turn right about 1/4 to 1/2 mile later onto Sunrise road, which a couple of miles later merges by the reservoir to become Spruce Run road. Take Sunrise/Spruce Run Rd for approximately 3.6 - 3.8 miles miles after the turn off of Rte 642, passing Sunrise Methodist church and Buffalo Valley MC clubhouse enroute to the rally site, which is on the right.  Slow down so as to be able to see the white 2 story building, which is about 100 feet off of the road in a wooded area.

From the southeast and straight south

The directions would be the same as previous directions after exiting Rte 15 northbound and then turning left onto Rte 642 west.

From the southwest

Find your way to Mifflinburg, Pa. and Rte 45. On the east end of town on Rte 45 is a Sheetz convenience store. Go about 4 miles to a left turn on Johnson Mill Road. This is about 1/4 mile past Dreisback Church road to the right. Go about 3 miles north through Buffalo Crossroads (a group of about 10-15 houses) and through the small town of Mazeppa to a "T" stop sign with a church on the right. Turn right, cross the bridge and turn left. Go about 1/2 mile and the road will turn sharply right. In another 1.5+ miles you'll pass a road to the left with a sign for Kuhns Brothers Log homes. Keep going another 1/4 mile to a sharp right turn. Follow the corner, cross a bridge and turn left onto Spruce run Road. Go 1.5 miles to a 'T'. Turn left and go about 2 miles to the rally site. There are other choices during these last few miles and turns, but this will get you there with the fewest side road decisions.

From West and Northwest

From I-80 West and northwest, take exit 186 at Loganton and turn right at the end of the ramp. There are no all night fuel stops at this exit, so you're best to fuel up at the Lamar, Rte 64 exit# 171 or 172. At that Loganton exit ramp go right, south on Rte 477,  7.2 miles through Loganton and up over the mountain to Rte 192. This is a winding road and caution should be used at night. Turn Left (east) on Rte 192 and go 14 miles to a small gas station on the left and a few houses called Forest Hill. There is a 'T' road to the right but stay straight 3/10 of a mile to the second road to the left. It should be labeled as Col John Kelly Road. Turn left and go 3.5 miles to the small village of Mazeppa (church and cemetery on the right) and a small bridge. Turn left immediately after the bridge onto Spruce Run Road. In about 1/2 mile and the road will turn sharply right. Follow the right turn. In another 1.5+ miles you'll pass a road to the left with a sign for Kuhns Brothers Log homes. Keep going another 1/4 mile to another sharp right turn. Follow the corner, cross a bridge and turn left onto Spruce Run road (again) Go 1.5 miles to a 'T'. Turn left and go about 2 miles to the rally site. There are other choices during these last few miles and turns, but this will get you there with the fewest side road decisions.

Latitude/ Longitude is almost exactly 77 degrees West and about 41.01.9 degrees/minutes/seconds North.

Instructions thanks to TonyG (a few years ago)

I thought I should throw in some comments to get the Amish Rally back at the top of the postings ...

You know ... if everyone shows up that says they are coming, we are going to need sleeping bags for the floor. I am not complaining, but rather saying that we might run out of beds. Really there is tons of good floor space, so don't worry about fitting everyone indoors. Maybe you would want to pack a sleeping bag, just in case.

I might do a first and ride my BMW with the trailer behind, but I haven't made up my mind yet. Of course that means I would have to train another motorcycle as to what the route is!

I am thinking about taking my time there and back for a change and foregoing those 600 mile days and do a little camping both ways. It is a bummer when you just finish a couple of big days and then everyone wants to go riding and you have a sore butt.

I have been thinking about going over the top of Lake Michigan and missing Chicago again, but that partially depends on if I am riding alone or with some of the group that has been saying they want to go to the Amish Rally from MN and WI.

The dates for the rally are on my calendar and I will be there, God willing.

Dave,
Probably can't get the time off work seeing as I am still doing interviews for a new job but I was wondering if you plan on going into the Upper Peninsula and then down toward Detroit or into Canada. There are some pretty decent camp sites around Seney in the Upper Peninsula. There's also a site called Jellystone park near grayling, Michigan.

If you get a group and are traveling toward detriot you should stop in to Hell. The ice cream there is great.

Blindstich,

If I go over the top I will probably be around Hell, MI when I stop for the day. I have been to Hell and it isn't as bad as some say it is.   I have been to the post office/ice cream palor/general store and it was pretty neat. What was interesting was the odometer on the bike I wa on had a mileage reading of 16666 while I was at the store!

On another note ... please email me directly so I can let you know when I am going to TWT in Milwaulee so we can meet and talk CX/GLs. I can't get your email address because I can't sign on. Put Silverwing in the subject line so I know it isn't junk mail.

Has a similar experience the first time I went to Hell but it happened at my girlfriends. The day we left the car odometer was reading the ending digits 666. I also bought ice cream with my credit card ending in 666. Was a hell of a nice day.

Since I returned from AK a bit ahead of schedule I retained the following:

1.  A bundle of Spousal dispensation points
2.  A week's worth of unused annual leave
3.  Several days of unexpended vacation fundage

Since R80Dave needs my wise counsel and Ron needs someone to humble in the twisties I am looking at reinvesting the above in the Amish rally.

So should I bring the AK Burg or my unassuming CX?  The Burg is by far the most comfortable touring bike I've ever ridden but the CX seemed to resent being left behind on the AK trip....
