My longest ride ever..
Reply Quote
Went out this morning and thought I was taking a short ride. I got it in my mind to go to this little town about 15 miles away. Once I got there I felt the need to go to the next one. This went on until I found myself 50 miles away at Morrow Mtn State Park.

There were a ton of bikes up there at the overlook. About 6 or 7 Goldwings and several Harleys. Just a couple crotch rockets and one Honda Magna. Feels good to finally be one of the guys with the bike instead of one of the guys looking and wishing he had one.

Stopped in Albemarle and had some food and then hightailed it home. First time in heavy traffic, first time on a 55mph divided highway.  While I was sitting outside enjoying my meal I noticed the plethora of bikes going by on the road. Nearly every one of them was a Harley. The men riding them had those half shell helmets and shorts on. T shirts too. The only real (full face) helmets I saw were on guys riding crotch rockets. But they had on T shirts also. I was the only person I saw wearing a jacket today. Granted, it is 90 degrees outside. And it's pretty hot with that thing on. But I'd rather be hot than wreck and be hurt really bad.

The bike ran perfectly. I think the suspension my be weak or worn. It does bounce some on bumpy roads. Are they supposed to do that? You can't hardly feel it when you go over RR tracks. Smooth. I only weigh 180 pounds, but when I get on it the front forks go down about 4 or 5 inches. I have no idea if that means anything though.

Top speed on this trip hit 80 for a brief moment. 70 was sustained for no more than 30 seconds and 60 got several miles in. Most of my ride was at 50 though and it just seems to like 50 better than any other speed. The wind is significantly more bearable at 50 than at 55 for some reason. For me anyways.

All in all this was a very good Saturday drive. My first of hopefully thousands.

I just don't see how peope can really go several hundred miles a day. My butt hurts pretty bad and I was only on there for about 110 miles. And that is with several stops along the way. Guess it's something one has to get used to. Isn't it?

Don't worry what anybody else doesn't wear. Wear the gear and keep your skin/senses. Had my first trip in Feb from Chesapeake to UVA. Didn't have any fanny fatigue but, it was cool so I wasn't sweating. It was great. Yeah, takes a while to build up endurance... using muscles in a new way. Keep taking those breaks and may you have many more rides.

Congrats on the shortest "longest ride ever". This time next year you will probably be thinking about how many times you woke up on a Sat. morn and rode to the beach for the heck of it. After a year of hard riding, your butt will be pretty much numb, and you wont feel a thing on long rides in saddle. I live in Pilot Mountain and have ridden many times to the beach.

Have fun. Be safe.
