THE HACK LEAVES SATURDAY

Gene McCall 06-05-2008, 5:07 AM
We will be leaving this Saturday, June 7th for points west and north!  We are delaying, waiting on delivery of a "Spot"unit like Jerry Brown's.  After seeing results of Jerry's email, with Google maps on each location, my wife said "Get one of those!"  As it turns out the delay has been good for us, we had a lot of last minute stuff to do and the weather west of us may be better than what Jerry Brown has encountered.  Thanks to Dave Fentum and Jason Farley we will have a laptop (with wifi) with us as we go.  We will try to post our progress to this thread but don't know how often we will be able to do that.  Now our route reads as follows:  the Badlands of South Dakota, Yellowstone and then northwest to Kamloops, BC.  After that on to Dawson City, YT and points west & north.  We hope to be in Dawson City by the 18th or 19th of June, after that who know?  The wind will blow us where it will!
Gene & Don

Will your route be taking you through the TwinCities (MLPS/St. Paul)?

If so any idea when?

If possible, I'd like to hook up with you and ride some of the way through Minnesota as you head towards the Bad Lands.

Let me know.

Tom Clark is the meteorologist for the Wilkes-Barre TV station and his daughter just graduated from Penn State in the same profession. She got a job out west and reported that they had to get the snowplows out to remove the knee deep hail from some of the roads around Boulder, Colorado on Thursday. I think waiting is a heck of a good idea. If you can just avoid all the heat we are scheduled for this weekend and into next week and get North quick enough. Lots of tornadoes to be wary of too. Floods, hmm, does the side car have a canoe paddle inside?

We will be going up through South Dakota and out to Yellowstone before turning north so we will miss. Mn. We may have to delay longer than Sat. our Spot unit is somewhere in the bowels of UPS and may not get here before the 10th!!! I will be on the horn tomorrow to Spot & UPS somebody better fix this!! BTW check our post in the test area.

Is probably just as well....the weather here (MLPS/StP) is going to be gray and rainy through much of the weekend and next week .

Perhaps when it gets a bit nicer, Wayne and I and whom ever else we can get will throw a belated "parade" just because....hmmm... I think we would need some "Alaska or Bust" signs...... ....LOL!!!

You guys have a safe trip, and I for one will be watching for trip posts and updates!!!

Howdy Gene n' Don,

Another nice Friday afternoon here in Halifax - with the sun shining and a slight cool breeze off the ocean - and my fridge is stocked with brews for the weekend - so, hoping you have as good of weather ahead during your travels, (of which I'm jealous) - though keep in mind - "As usual - Beers will be gone before Monday!" -and have two cots, downstairs - Otherwise, I'm still working on my ol' bike - albeit it's coming along and will be on the road real soon - as while I'm waiting for engine parts (next week) - I've been painting it "midnight blue" with "gloss white trim" - along with keeping my engine covers "black" ....... yet, lots of new shiny parts inside ......

Try to keep in touch - n' don't forget to ride safe !!!!

Cheers,

Bryan

bfknova 06-07-2008, 10:25 AM

Well it's Saturday, and I'm sitting here wondering if the Hack is on the road yet ?????  Er maybe their waiting till Monday deliveries ????  Regardless - it's still gonna be a great experience n' have a lineup of biker gals awaiting your arrival in Halifax <grin> ......  speaking of which,  I know Gene's married, but not sure about Don - but no harm regardless ....as all in good fun and ol' biker's accepted rules "Hugs for everyone!" ..... n' a parade for the 'Hacksters" .....

Otherwise, another nice sunny day here, with very little breeze off the ocean - but a perfect day for a ride along the shoreline, and check out the beaches ...... damn, it's a long walk - so gotta get my bike back on the road - real soon !!!!!

By the way - if you get this message - just wondering about Don's friend in Halifax and possibly how to get in contact ?  As I'd like to share any forthgoing plans upon your coming ????  Aye, I'm not shy, nor a jerk, so no worries - just wanna make your trip even more memorable - especially Nova Scotian hospitality !!!!! ie" do you have any alergies to shellfish (lobster, clams, mussels) - er beer <grin> ?

Cheers, n' Happy Trails ahead,

Bryan

According to the voicemail I got from Gene this morning they were about an hour from launch. I have not heard otherwise so I can only assume the show is on the road. Gene was able to drive to Nashville on Friday and retrieve the Spot unit from the bowles of the UPS machine. I was unfortuantly not able to ride the first hundred miles or so with them this morining as planned as my only safely ridable bike was found to have a bad rear tire on Thursday.

Spot is email based. It sends an email to the addresses on Gene and Don's list when Gene hits the button. They were limited to 10 email addresses so they split them 5 for each of them.

A bail fund might not be a bad idea.... :)

Jason if you can message back to the SPOT device ask Gene what kind of fuel economy (or lack thereof) they are getting with that poor overloaded ST1100. My last tank full returned 48,9 mpg and I'm real happy about that.

By the way I can not send messages to them on Spot.
It is just a small GPS device that is much like an emergency becon unit but it can send a pre established message via the Spots system.

He was estimating and planning on 30mpg and anything more than that was going to be gravy.
We installed a 7 1/2 gallon fuel tank on the trailer for them so they could make it through some of the more remote areas where fuel was limited. Gene has a small battery powered fuel transfer pump to move the fuel to the ST tank.

I just checked the weather Monday morning for Parsons, Kansas. I hope the sidecar floats and they took along a canoe paddle like I suggested. Not looking too good today until afternoon. They might be hemmed in by flooded roads. It will be interesting to see if they make 300 miles today. Once they are on the west side of the front the weather should be a few degrees cooler. I can't wait until Wednesday when it is supposed to cool off a bit around here.

Watch it, you guys, we're checking on what comments you are making.   Currently stopped at an RV Park in Bozeman,MT.

Will be spending the third day straight on I90 - a bit boring, but some beautiful snow-on-mountains pictures.

Need over 600 miles to see the guys in Kamloops who modified the front-end of Gene's bike - no trouble, just a check-up.

WIFI is great, if the park-owner doesnt' turn it off as you're finishing off a 2 page email to your wife.

It looks like Jerry and Don and Gene are within a few hundred miles of each other, heading nearly opposite directions.  Jerry just checked in from Shelby, MT.

That is moving!!!  That works out to 1000 km or 600 miles in the past 24 hours for Jerry.

Hi all,

Shelby, MT is the home of the largest crowd to ever witness a Jack Dempsy fight. Unfortunately, nobody in Shelby seems to know anything about the fight ever taking place ...

Jerry emailed me last night and gave me a call this morning. He is coming for a night or two here in Wisconsin in a dry friendly place. He said he is 3 days away, but unless he does some sightseeing I figure he will be here Tuesday night.

All is well with him, but he related that he has not had a dry day since he left NC. Some of the wetness has been snow and slush ... not my favorite riding conditions either. He is safe and sound and his riding gear has kept him warm and dry inside the layers.

Maybe I can get him to post something himself when he gets here.

That is truly amazing.  An Iron Butt contender on a Burghman scooter

with a car tire on the rear.  I know he will have some great stories to tell

us at the Amish Rally.  Gene and Don also, can't wait to see all those guys.
