Search disabled

ChopperCharles 07-01-2008, 8:55 PM
The problem with the database is that this forum software stores links to every word from every post in a "search barrel" table. It grows with every post input, well beyond the size of the actual posts. So, for now search is not going to work. I'm going to implement a google search engine later, but for now it will just be broken.

Meanwhile, we can use Google manually by specifying choppercharles.com as the site to search.

Go to Advanced search here:
Google Advanced Web Search

and specify your search terms then put in choppercharles.com in the "Search within a site or domain:" field near the bottom.

Works great!

Piggybacking off Kenglong's comment, here's how I search the site till there's a fix:

In my Google search bar, I type the stuff I'm looking for with "site:choppercharles.com/cs" after it. My petcock is leaking gas, so:
petcock site:choppercharles.com/cs
Or, I need new tires:
best tires site:choppercharles.com/cs
The great thing about using your browser's search box / bar is that it keeps the search text there, so you just need to double click "petcock" and change it to "best tires," then hit Enter. It should still keep the site: text.

Pretty simple! (You should use the /cs as that's where the Forums live.)

The search hint is excellent!  This is the best internet hint I've learned this year.  Thanks for posting it.

Unfortunately it doesn't bring up even 10% of the posts you're inquiring about. The resident search engine was much better, let's hope Charles can get it back online sooner or later.
Then again, 10% or so is MUCH better than nothing.

I really REALLY miss the ability to click on a member’s name and be able to click “show all posts by this member”.

It really helps to read several posts by someone to get a feel for that person, their bike, and their past, before posting a reply.

I was also very useful to read through my own past posts, to make sure that I am not overly repeating myself.

However, I am thankful for what we do have.

I think that looking up prior posts by user is probably the #1 thing that I too miss from the search feature.  Many times you can recall a thread by those who posted, but it's impossible to get a decent search result via Google, posters with over 1000 posts are lucky to bring up a couple dozen posts there when their handle is searched on this site.

Maybe it might be possible to re instate just the member search feature?  I don't know how the software on here works, so it might not be that easy.

Please reply if you don't get this message.
