Saw a CX650 turbo with an aftermarket oil cooler installed on it. What are the benefits/reasons behind this and is it common? Thanks...

It is exceptionally rare, and the benefits are it keeps the oil 20-40 degrees cooler. Cooler oil means cooler engine, cooler engine means longer stator life (in theory anyway).
I'm not sure where the hell they get installed, I've only ever seen the hoses, never how and where they are routed, or the location of the cooler itself. The bike is so tightly designed, I'd love to see how it's done and not affect the esthetics of the bike.

Well, as to where the cooler is mounted, I can't speak for other kits, but Dan's is attached to the screen in front of the radiator.

The few I have seen look terrible with hoses hanging all over. Not the set-up I would want on my classic CXT. I would try to get lines made up to stream-line the bike. It would still look unattractive though. Unless you are doing serious hard riding with the bike, it isn't at all needed. There is no data to show it will aid in the life of the stator. The engines have been good over the years with few failures. Honda knew what they were doing when they built this beast. However, keep in mind it was a "show" bike. To say "look what I got!!!"

You're right, "show bikes". First, the 750A (yes, had one and loved it), the CBX, then the Turbos. Honda was really getting into high gear and they made them to say, "look what we did". The CBX and the Turbo were both pricey, but they got people into the showrooms so they would buy something else. I consider them great achievements!

I would rather see a custom bent steel line with a 90 degree elbow to make things look clean. However, that doesnt' look bad.

Either 90 or 45 degree elbows would clean things up a lot. I don't think that using solid steel tubing on an engine with that much vibration would be a great idea....... just asking for fatigue cracks. Not a place where you want cracks to develop.

This could be true--However, rubber isolation mounts due a tremendous amount to help this problem.

As far as I know, I am the only one manufacturing an oil cooler which fits the CX size oil filter cover. The oil cooler benefits the turbocharger bearings and has no effect whatsoever on the stator. I'm not sure how that false data got started, but there is no way oil temp has anything to do with stator service life. The oil cooler helps prevent coking of the oil on the hot turbo bearings and extends oil service life. My oil cooler reduces oil temp 20-30 degrees. I've sold more than 30 of them over the past eight years, they work and I have never has a problem with them.

Dan,what temp does the oil reach in the Turbo CX`s,at `normal` useage,and `thrapping the arse off it`/regularly using plenty of boost?

Dan, not too long ago someone posted the URL of a site where they were
selling adapters that attach down where the oil filter bolts on to the
engine. If my memory serves me correctly, one variation was to allow
spin on oil filters, and the other one also had feeds for an external
oil cooler. Unfortunately the search function has been disabled, so I
can't point to it.

You've never mentioned that oil cooler helps stator life? I thought that was its primary purpose?
If it's not higher temperatures killing the stator, then what is?
And did that guy give up on the burn proof stator or is it still in the works?

Now I'm really confused!
Dan--
At what mileage do you see problems with the turbocharger bearings? I can honestly say that I've never had a problem with any of mine. That is why I'm asking? I always run good oil, and change frequently-- I've taken apart bikes with high mileage, and the turbocharges were still fine. This is why I'm wandering.
