First i would like to start with thank you. i have read the forum longer than i owned a bike, and have gaind alot of information from here. now for a small how did i get here.

a guy i work with talked about bikes so much i had to find one. have always wanted a bike but closest i ever had gotten was an old dirt bike as a kid. while talking to him one day he said he had a second one that he no longer rides and would sell it to me for 500 dollars. I was a little skeptical at first so i got its info and started checking out information for it.

1980 CX500 Custom 4k miles. the only issue other than needing some cleaning is a cracked glass on the speedo.

i have a few mods in mind for it. any info would be greatly appriciated. i have been searching all the usual internet markets

no specific order to them

strip it down and clean up and repaint the frame and tank
remove any pieces i dont need
solo seat ( old school with rear springs)
make it a hardtail ( will lower the rear end about 2-3 inches probley till the drive shaft is straight)
new front and rear fenders
new lights all around
new speedo and tach
pods ( new jets)
clean up battery area
new forks( what size do i need to look for want to be about 2-3 inches shorter)
maybe get a few pieces plated
new exhaust (nothing real loud)
white wall tires

i think this would be a great father son project for the winter, as long as i put a heater in the garage at some point

4K for $500 that's great. Most of us get 40k for that price. I hope your son is young other wise you might be looking for another bike to work on along side.

i got my 14k '80 custom (not running, just needed carbs rebuilt) for $125.
its the one i just painted metallic blue.

thanks, i am sure i will have a ton of questions as my modifications get under way. but that will not be till atleast October i am suspecting as i plan to ride as much as i can till then. I am more than pleased with the bike.

how do i find out, or if anyone knows off the top of thier head, what size diameter forks will fit into the frame of the CX?

any decent priced places to find a solo seat?
