I'm not sure about exhaust. I haven't been able to find a 2 into 1 in my price range. And I would like to get a gauge that has the speedo and tach in one. probably not going to ditch the front fender all together. maybe trim it down and add a pedestrian slicer.confused the bars are what they call Clubman's I picked them up on ebay for around $30 shipped. but now I am thinking I may get some adjustable ones.also in the works are rearsets and polishing the aluminum parts. ditch the radiator shroud. 89 Yamaha XT 350CX500 Custom Cafe My CX500 Re: More Photos LRCXed 09-04-2008, 9:36 PM Hay Tippy, I know your thinking about it,,,,,, those rims would sure look nice with polished spokes!!!!!!!!! LOLThe addiction lives in the imagination of our minds.......... Go ahead, give into it. One more thing. You might want to add a shield behind the air pods to keep them from collecting extra dirt or rain water from the rear tire.Looks great so far. Thompson Re: Polishing Tippy 09-05-2008, 7:18 AM Yeah I was thinking about some kind of mud guard. I don't like the stock one, but I need to come up with something. And you two better watch it on the polishing thing. If my wife finds out what you said she may hunt you down :) I was thinking I'll do the valve covers and the controls, then the carbs. then maybe the forks and wheels. before I break down and do the radiator (what could you seal it with?) and the swing arm and....has anyone just polished the bare part of the wheels. I thought I may try that before going all the way (a way to wean myself.) My family is out of town tonight so I am going to go at it. I could not get the MAAS polish locally, so I picked up some Mothers Aluminum polish. Will it work as well?P.S. I got my repaired tank back today 89 Yamaha XT 350CX500 Custom Cafe My CX500 Re: Polishing LRCXed 09-05-2008, 8:32 PM OK Tippy, since we have no one around to stop you, start with the hardest part first. Yes, the wheels! Use some good air craft paint stripper and a 3M red scrub pad to loosen up all the stubborn paint. Hopefully you have a die grinder with the attachments for a buffing wheel and some buffing compound. When you get the paint off, just start buffing the 5 spokes one at a time. They buff really fast and nice until you get to the end where the spokes are attached with the rivets. We will get to them later when your done with the main sections. You can leave the rim itself alone for now. I think the spokes will do enough for you by itself. As for the radiator, when your done with it, go get a can of DUPLICOLOR Engine enamel clear. It does a great job of protection. You have to wash all the parts off with soap and water, or lacquer thinner, and wipe it off with a good clean lint free cloth like the blue paper shop towels sold at parts stores. Remove all finger prints and make sure your hands are clean before you handle it when your painting. Any smudges or marks will be there forever if you paint over them. If you start with the hardest parts first, you'll enjoy the easy ones later since they go so much quicker. Are you going to keep the radiator side covers or leave them off? Follow the advice in my "polishing aluminum" post for any tech advice. Here is a picture of my 78 with steel spokes, but you can see that the center section is publishable and protected with the clear coat afterward.Let me know if you have any questions.Good luck and be patient. It's worth it in the end. You wont need to do much after you polish the parts except for an occasional polishing cream coating once in a while.Larry If your going to do something, do it right, don't do it half as@*d.http://globalcxglvtwins.hostingdelivered.com/ Re: Polishing Tippy 09-06-2008, 8:35 AM Thanks for the advice. But I didn't get it until 2:00 am (when i got home) I polished the valve covers, the brake and clutch leavers, the fuse cover, the tops of the carbs, the top of the kill switch/throttle houseing, and the radiator shroud sides. it is looking good. But I am still having trouble with my rusty tank. I'll try to post pics later, when i get them. 89 Yamaha XT 350CX500 Custom Cafe My CX500 Re: Polishing CaTacL1sm 09-06-2008, 9:14 AM if you keep getting rust in your carbs, throw an inline filter on and try to avoid using reserve (it bypasses the petcock filter). that should keep you running until you get a better tank ( i love the CX500 deluxe tank for the cafe style) or line the inside of your present tank Schrödinger's cat beats your Large Hadron Collider Re: Polishing gamache 09-06-2008, 9:41 AM hey Tippy, do you have any plans for those engine bars when you strip them off? Re: Polishing Tippy 09-06-2008, 1:57 PM yeah I think i will get my tank lined. i don't have any plans for the guards, but they are not in very good shape one side has definitely done its job, the other is scratched also. i can take pictures i may be interested in selling them, or i was thinking about sanding them and getting them powder-coated. 89 Yamaha XT 350CX500 Custom Cafe My CX500 Re: Polishing makenzie71 09-06-2008, 2:22 PM you should line the tank yourself...much cheaper and shops have a tendency to use Kreem liner which is garbage. Re: Pod Filters and oil breather Tippy 09-08-2008, 2:16 PM Ok those of you who have done the pod filters what did you do with the oil breather tube that comes out? I saw this image where it looks like it is routed back to the inspection port. Is that a problem? how would it be done? Currently I have just capped it and vented it with a filter. Then I have intentions of checking it when I change oil. Also should oil come out of that? If so how much? 89 Yamaha XT 350CX500 Custom Cafe My CX500 Re: Pod Filters and oil breather I'm going to GL 09-08-2008, 4:50 PM I believe most people use a 'mini' pod filter for a breather. Not certain on CX, but my 82 GL would use one with a 1/2" nipple. I've seen them at several auto parts stores in the chrome - disco parts aisle.IMO, the crankcase should be vented to the atmosphere not re-routed not back to itself. The idea is to relieve some of the pressure pulses caused by piston movement (500cc displaced ABOVE the piston = 500cc displaced BELOW the piston). 1982 GL500 "When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro" - Hunter S. Schrödinger's cat beats your Large Hadron Collider Re: Pod Filters and oil breather Tippy 09-09-2008, 7:25 AM Here I just zoomed in and cropped the other. You can see the blue filter is the one I picked up at the auto parts store. I put a "T" in the line. So the original line that went to the air box connects to the top of the T. On the side i put the filter so it could breath, then on the bottom I put a line that has a cap so dirt and junk can't get in, but I can still drain it.well the image doesn't want to post here is a linkhttp://farm4.static.flickr.com/3194/2843228230_8337334520_o.jpg 89 Yamaha XT 350CX500 Custom Cafe My CX500 Re: Pod Filters and oil breather CaTacL1sm 09-09-2008, 7:51 AM its hard to see what you did there, wehn i deleted my airbox and whent to pod filters, i didn't do anything about that. i took the hose that went into the bottom of the airbox and sent it over to where the rest of the drain hoses are... If you're still in control...You're not going fast enough. Re: Pod Filters and oil breather Tippy 09-10-2008, 7:41 AM Bear you mean if you try to block it off completely. Right? Not the way I have done with a filter in the line. Also does anyone know how much if any oil should come out that? 89 Yamaha XT 350CX500 Custom Cafe My CX500 Re: Pod Filters and oil breather BearCX 09-13-2008, 2:34 AM Correctamundo. A filter will still "breathe" in and out. Only a couple of drops of oil per day, but in a week you'll have to wash your engine. LOL. If you're still in control...You're not going fast enough. Re: Pod Filters and oil breather Victrix 09-13-2008, 1:50 PM Why not build a catch-can, have the vent dump into a catch can with a filter on the top. That way oil will be trapped in the catch-can, and the filter will still allow it to breathe. You may only have to empty it once every 6mo-1yr.Isaac You meet the nicest people on a Honda. Re: Pod Filters and oil breather BearCX 09-14-2008, 4:05 AM Like your thinking. If you're still in control...You're not going fast enough. Re: Pod Filters and oil breather Tippy 09-16-2008, 2:13 PM I'm more interested in removing things than adding things. I have a fair amount of tubing so i should not have to empty it often. I figure every time I change my oil. Though I would still kind of like to feed it back into the inspection port. But keep my basic set up. The only difference would be rather than dumping the oil it would be fed back into the engine. I cut the drain hose so I had just enough length to feed it between the carbies then capped it off with the filter, the hose has also been 'zippy tied' so it doesn't flap around any.Rone Re: Pod Filters and oil breather Tippy 09-16-2008, 7:23 PM Does oil get in your filter? 89 Yamaha XT 350CX500 Custom Cafe My CX500 Re: Pod Filters and oil breather ROne 09-17-2008, 4:57 AM Hey Tippy, not too sure as I've only just put these on in the last few weeks.
