Hello all,
I am looking for a deluxe tank for my GL500. I am
indifferent about the exterior condition but would prefer to find one
with minimal rust in the tank.
Thank you,
Andrew

I may be selling my 1982 CX500C tank. Great shape, no rust, just rebuilt the petcock. Would that work for you?

Just trying to be helpful, you do know that both the GL sidecovers utilize the GL tank for their front attachment, and the Deluxe tank will not provide that.

RichNCT,
Thank you for the information but i am one of the quarky cafe racer
people that has been shadowing the site for some time now. I have
most of my build up done, but am having trouble locating a
D-tank. I guess they are hard to come by. to reply to
you post, I am going to be fiberglassing some circular side covers or
re-routing the wriring and leaving an open area where the air box used
to be.
Fenix,
I appreciate the offer, but i have my heart set on a D-tank.

Completely understand! Just today went out to the moto-salvage yard and found me a VERY nice D-tank on a skeleton bike. Those tanks are getting harder and harder to find! I may have located another one... I'll let you know.

Fenix, Sounds cool. I figured that you had a plan, but I do see folks buy the wrong stuff sometimes without knowing. The '78 only came as a "Standard", but was known simply as a CX500. A '78 tank is probably not what you are looking for. I do have one of those ('78). Plenty of '78 bike pics around here for general reference.

Thanks Fastg60 -
We'll, I believe those are "Deluxe" tanks...at least from what I've read and found myself. However, Rich said the '78's only came with a standard tank. I'm kind of confused now :o
I would be totally in to buying the master cylinder from the salvage bike in the second pic if you're willing to part it out?

Yeah, I'm not really sure either. My best guess is that a
standard tank comes without decals and lettering while the deluxe tanks
come with all of that stuff. I would definitely be interested in buying
one of those tanks assuming that they are pretty clean on the
inside. Shoot me an email if you want to part with one -

I don't mean to cause confusion with my 2/3 of the knowledge. The Deluxe model was not made in 1978 model year, and the two pics fast60 had were '78s, so they are not Deluxes. That's the 2/3 I know. I have never had a Deluxe model in my hands, so I don't really know how different the tank for Deluxes is or isn't. The several '78 CX500s (now often referred to as Standards to differenciate them from slightly different Deluxes) I have had did have gas tanks decorated like the red one fast60 showed us.

From everything I've seen and read, the only differences between the Standard and the Deluxe are the front end, the radiator, and the wheels. The tank, seat, and frame should all be the same (except that the Standard tank has thick plastic insulation on the bottom, and the Deluxe tank doesn't.)

Excellent. Starting to get a better understanding of the tank issue. If anyone's interested - replacing the 1982 cx500c tank with a standard or deluxe tank is not too difficult.
The forward bolt mount from the cx500c tank needs to be built up with a 1/2" washer/spacer and the bolt down near the seat needs modification (new bolt hole). Other than that it's a pretty straight forward mod.
Rich - because you were so helpful with my petcock questions - wanted you to know I was able to get a '79 cx500d tank with a non-vac petcock. So far so good!

I'm still really interested in one of those tanks. Standard or D-tank are ok for me. I have GL500I parts that i'm willing to trade (if that sways anyone). Also willing to buy one flat out.
Thank you

dunno, what are they worth? both are in great shape, functional petcock/caps, i have rinsed them both with muriatic acid inside, there was very minimal surface specs of rust starting, i think both were stored empty, with caps on.
shoot me some offers, i may part with both of them!

fastg60,
I would be willing to pay $50+/- and shipping for one of them. I hope that is a decent price to negotiate from.

it would take more for me to part with them. sorry, i'm thinking closer to $100+ shipping/tank mostly based on what i would need to replace them with another style i want.
