My Turbo nearly dies!!

BobD 07-07-2008, 1:15 PM
I have an 82 CX500 Turbo - very little used with only 6700 miles from new.

Whenever I use it, after 20 - 30 miles it nearly dies. It never cuts out but loses power. If I pull up and wait a minute, off I go again. It will then only go a short distance before nearly dying again. If the bike stands until much cooler, I can go off again with no problem.

Also, if I let it run above say 6000 rpm, the fuel system light will come on to say there is a problem - but what problem.

i have had the turbo stripped and there is nothing apparently wrong with it.

Does anyone out there have any idea? Could it be the fuel pressure regulators and if so, where do I get suitable replacements.

Thank you in anticipation of any advice.

Check your battery.  I had similar symptoms earlier this year.  Put in a new battery, no more problems.

I have only owned the bike for two years and the battery was allegedly new when I bought it, but I will try that one and see.

Thanks.

I wouldn't run out and buy a new battery.

First thing is to run it until the fuel system light comes on and then pull the ECU while the bike is running. Post back on what LEDs are lit up on the ECU. Don't turn the bike off otherwise the fault code will be lost.

You may have more than one problem too. The loss of power may be a fuel restriction. Debris settles in the canister filter and slowly gets sucked up into the media as you ride. When you shut down the bike the crud drops off and settles back down in the canister. Remove the filter and try tapping it and backflushing it with carb cleaner. If a bunch of rust falls out replace it. There's also a fine mesh cone filter at the fuel pump. This problem won't cause an error code though.

Could be a bunch of different things but first thing is to get that error code corrected.

In all fairness, I didn't actually say, "run out and buy a new battery", I said "check it."

It's one of the fastest, easiest tests.  If your stator is charging, and your battery won't hold a load, you will get the EXACT symptoms that he is describing.
My battery was two years old when this occured.
Hell, you can read about it somewhere on this forum because I thought it was my stator.

When your battery cannot hold a charge, the stator cannot run the system.  Your fuel pump won't work correctly, and you'll get a fault.

Been there, done that, got the "I'm an idjit" T-shirt.

By the end, I could drive about 2 minutes after charging the battery for 8 hours.

Why do I own five bikes? Because I'm not married. DUH! (and I haven't taken a vacation in two years. . . . )

True but he doesn't have to recharge the battery. Simply stopping for a minute allows his bike to recoupe. If the battery was so bad it couldn't run the EFI it also wouldn't be able to turn the starter motor.

Now this was rare as hell but a coworker had $5K worth of performance work done to his Harley. Right after getting it back he had shutting down issues while accelerating. The speedshop couldn't figure it out and eventually tore the engine down again looking for the problem. Turned out the new battery had a break under the terminal inside the shell. As the engine revved up under load the connection opened up from the vibration.

I do appreciate all of these suggestions and will probaly work through them all, going down the path of the ones that can be done by time and labour before rushing out and spending too much money.

Thank you.

Hi George,

Done all those bits and am able to deduce that it is the fuel pressure regulator.

I am now looking for a replacement/spare! Any ideas? We have a dealer here in the UK who does not have anything at the moment. Sorry to ask again, but can you suggest any USA sourses?

Thank you.

Ping Pete (CXTURBOBOOST). He may be able to help you out. Many of the parts are no longer available from Honda and if the regulator happens to be one of them, you have no choice to go used or possibly improvise with something off a car.
