I'm trying to ressurect a 79 CX500. I'm without a manual so I have a question or two.

The exhaust is very hot on one side, the other side is cold and the big mystery is that the hot and cold side switched on me!

What are the valve clearances? I'd like to adjust them.

The bike has VERY little power.

So here's a little about the bike:
Great spark
cleaned the carbs
Sat for 3 years
fresh gas
old air filter
exhaust expulsion feels same on both pipes
new spark plugs
new battery

Any other info on what to grease, change or check out during my restoration is very much appreciated.

Thanks
Shane

Check out this site. http://www.elsham.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/cx500/
Ignore the fact that they say valve clearance is .10mm and .12mm

Go to Rob Davis CX500 site and you`ll find tutorials. Definately consider getting a shop manual if your going to wrench. It will make your life so much easier. Synchronize your carbs.

Not sure it would fix your problem with the cold/hot pipes, but check to see if the tank is rusty inside.  If you don't have an inline filter and you have a rusty tank chances are your carbs are dirty again.  Good thing is that new rust flakes won't be as hard to clean out as old gas in the carbs.

Good luck!

Forgot to mention that I put an inline filter in too.
Thanks for the responses.
I'm working on getting a manual but till then...
When someone says to grease the gears on the rear wheel does that mean the grease zirt (spelling) just nex to where the lower shock meets the final drive shaft? Is that zirk an add on part by P.O.?

What oil should I use in the final drive?

In reply to the "sync the carbs" post, I have been told that's more for sport bikes and won't really do much for the CX. True?

Thanks again, Shane

Grease the gears.....Should mean the gear that meshes with the rear wheel when the final drive is removed.
The grease zerk is for the end of the driveshaft where it slides up and down the input shaft on the final drive unit.
90 WT gear oil is fine.
The carbs need syncronized just like any other multicarb vehicle, but syncronizing is only done after the bike is running well and been tuned up.
