Aloha from Hawaii

Gas prices are makin' me mad. $4.70 a gallon for regular unleaded.

I bought a GL500 Silverwing off the local craigslist for $300 cash last month.

I haven't ridden much since moving to Hawaii 21 years ago.

But it seems that it's a skill that doesn't diminish much, even if I am gettin' to be a geezer. I'll be 59 this year.

And the Silverwing apparently is still okay, with 18k miles on it.

I took it into the cycle service shop for a once over when I got it.

They changed the oil and filter, the plugs and the airfilter. It needed a new battery...wouldn't start when I bought it.

The shop did a little electrical troubleshooting and charged me $369 for all the stuff they did.

I could have saved a few bucks by doing it all myself, but I figure I saved money by buying it cheap.

The new title and registration set me back $182. So I am on the road for under $900.

One little hangup. The Motorcycle Safety Course is not being offered on the Big Island, where I live, this year. Only Oahu (Honolulu).

I could get a full MC endorsement on my license by completing the MSC. Or by taking the road test. And my insurer won't sell me a policy unless I have the full endorsement (not a permit.)

But when I called for an appointment to take the road test, the bureaucracy gave me a date on the 26th of August, a month and a half from now! Standby!

I am just riding it uninsured...only problem there is the safety inspection sticker is expired and can't be renewed unless I present proof of insurance. I hope a policeman doesn't spot it.

Effen bureaucracy...I hate this type of crap...

But I love Hawaii and it's nearly always good weather for riding.

I am a sorta forum junky...mainly politics. Somehow this one on Honda  transverse V-Twins looks like it might be informative...

From what I have noticed motorcyle insurance pretty much costs the same amount from everyone. I pay $192 with state farm and my brother pays $196 with progressive. They both let us get policys without a full license.

Yeah, Progressive Insurance told me on the phone that the State of Hawaii has requested that insurance companies in this state not write policies for anyone without either:
  1. A full license endorsement, or
  2. A completion of the MSF Safety Course with their permit.
In Hawaii, a course completion enables you to forego the County motorcycle road test and just pay for the license endorsement.

I think they are gonna charge me about $250 a year for minimum insurance when I get the full license.

My claims and violations record isn't the best lately.

Last year, my wife had a DUI, a license suspension and two at-fault accidents. I got hit in the rear and went to the E-room and filed a claim. Then this year I had an at-fault, then the car was stolen from the front yard resulting in a $15K payout. I'd guess we don't look like very good customers just now.

Trying to do better and paying the big bucks for car insurance at present.
