AFAIK (and from discusiions over here  anyway)
those spoked wheels have to be tailor made to the hub
there are  no spoked wheels from other bikes that will fit straight on.
The front possibly/maybe/dont know, but the rear? I very much doubt it

One of our lot wanted some but quickly went off the idea when he got a quote
from a wheelbuilder

I guess it's all in how you look at them! If all you see is a black rim than I guess they could get boring to some! But I saw a little more there. About 5 days each to polish them, but it was worth it.
These were still in the process when these were taken.

It was an extremely long process  of sanding and dozens of different types of polishing wheels on an air powered die grinder. I found a process a few years ago that dissolves the anodizing off making a little easier to sand off the rims and buff them out to a great shine. These are the only ones I have ever seen polished, but the PITA was worth it in the long run.
Thanks for the compliment!

I almost didn't have the patience either. These things were more of a pain than when I did my 78 standard rims. The end of the spokes where they attach to the rim was the worst. Lots of hand sanding and using small jewelers polishing wheels to get in the edges. The nice part of all this is that when they are done, I use a product called MAAS polish on them. It adds such a good film of protection and even adds to the shine, that I don't have to do it more than maybe twice a year. The stuff does wonders to protect the shine and keep me from rubbing on them all the time. I use it on all the polished parts of my CX's and it really lasts.

Do you have some time to explain the 'process'?

Nice job.  I buffed like hell for a similar effect on the handlebar controls.  Getting through the black was a real pita.

I tell you what I'll do, Let me get some photos together and I'll put up a post with the process. Most of the equipment I use is air powered and requires an air compressor and some air sanders. But you can do the preparations by hand if need be or an electric vibrating sander. You'll need to order bricks of different grades of compound and polishing wheels also. I'll do a little research and find a few sites that I can add that sell the supplies  also. Give me a few days and I'll let you know through this thread when it's up. I'm nursing a torn rotater cuff in my left shoulder right now, so depending on how it feels day to day, I'll find some parts to do with a step by step process OK!
As far as the black anodizing on the controls, I found a way to dissolve the anodized finish so it buffs right off. I use Castrol Super Clean to soak the parts in for an hour or so. I have a 5 gallon jug of it from a year ago that I bought to soak parts in. I here that they changed the formula though, so I'm going to go buy some of the new stuff and see how it works.
Like I said, give me some time OK.

Just my two cents. I like the standard comstar wheels. I was thinking to buy some wheels and try to reverse the reversed wheels back to standards. I also found a CM400 comstar front wheel that 's 2.15 x 18" and missed out on ebay, dang!

Just an update guys! I'm still working on setting up for the post. I have to polish a few things and take pics at the same time. All I have left is to do a section of a front rim and the process pics as I go. This project is really taking a toll on my shoulder, but I think it's worth it for everyone. POP, oops there goes another vicodin....weeeeeeeeee

It always baffles me why people would want to change from reliable, good looking, easy to keep clean Comstars to wire spokes.

Have you ever had a wire spoke break? I did on my GL1000 sidecar outfit and it took out about a dozen of it's neighbours with it. Not a good situation. Comstar spokes don't break.

Have you ever had to true wire spoke wheels? It is a royal pain and really should be checked annually. Comstars stay true unless you bend the rim.

And I won't even begin to discuss rusty spokes.....

Comstars DO break. I had a customer with a CB-400A and a wheel chair/side car rig. The Comstar wheels should be checked for rivets that are loosening up if a sidecar is installed. His rear wheel was pretty wobbly and had to be changed. I don't recall the mileage at the time but probably less than 15k. About polishing: In Vietnam I heard a story about a crew chief that worked on and flew in a general's Command and Control Huey. He thought it would be nice to Brasso polish the transmission main mast (The part below the rotor head and visible above the cowling. The rotors and head eventually departed the ship in flight due to corrosion. Hueys don't glide too well without a main rotor. Anodizing coatings are there for a reason and so might the paint be on a Comstar wheel. The 78 CX models had an unpainted finish but there may have been some kind of coating or treatment to prevent corrosion on them. The 78 CX500 was my fourth bike when it came out. I willingly parted with a 69 CB750 Sandcast because I was tired of maintaining a rear drive chain and the mess from lubing it, spoked wheels with tube type tires (one blow out and you won't miss those either) and points and condensers. Motorcycles are subject to progress and if you want to see how bad they were in the old days, ride a new one and then jump on a pre 1969 bike. The front disc brake was the best thing to ever come down the pike, followed by shaft drive and tubeless tires. Throw in a reliabe electronic ignition and liquid cooling and now you can ride without having to tinker every other weekend. Just my $.02.

I've had spokes on dirtbikes and every time I think about replacing one another breaks. My brothers Kawasaki was bought with 1 broke spoke. The end of summer I had 6. Spokes may look nice but they require more work. I hate the comstars but i prefer them over spokes. I always seem to think yamaha did it better having different styles with their wheels.

If we all had wheels like LRCXed nobody would want spokes.

I won't say it is impossible to break a Comstar because I have seen ones from bikes that have crashed, but I put over the sidecar on my GL500 at about 55,000 Km and I retired it with about 100,000 and the only time I drove it without the sidecar was up & down the block after I had been working on it a couple of times. The front wheel went the whole distance (45,500Km). I changed to an 18" CX rear for better tire selection at about 88,000Km (that's 33,000 on the original wheel and 12,000 on the 18").

At about 75,000 I replaced the rusted, wobbling, out of round spoked wheel on the sidecar with the Comstar that is still on after that 25,000 Km and somewhere more than 35,000 on the Nighthawk and the 650.

I have put something like 25,000 Km on the 650 so far, all with the sidecar. I have not had any rivets or bolts on the wheels loosen up. (I can only imagine the amount of maintenance wire spokes would have needed over that time.)

I have a feeling that the problems with your customer's wheel had some other cause than the extra loading of the sidecar.

Too right Ron. Shaft drives Rule !! Spokes are hard to clean, go rusty and as said, a PIA to true up. No tinkering for me.

Hey Greg,

I hear ya........I too was put off by the Comstars at first. I looked into the 'spokes' but too much effort and probably too expensive to custom make so I saw two choices.  Polish the bastards up like chrome (ie: like the ones featured on this thread.....awesome job by the way) or 'Powdercoat' them satin black!  So I went down the 'powdercoat' trail and now I love them, they look tougher and really stand out from the crowd.

That's my two cents worth ;)

i worked in a wheel repair shop for years. the cheapest and easiest way we found for stripping anodizing before polishing is simple run of the mill oven cleaner. spray, let sit, rinse, spray again. then sand! sand lots. till your fingers bleed.

LRCXed 08-05-2008, 5:30 PM
The sanding and bleeding fingers is a thing of the past when I used the Castrol Super clean. It sand off like an old weathered paint job after the soaking.
