My GL500 is going to need grips and I was thinking of going with the Kuryakyn Iso's. Do I get the 1" or 7/8" universals or GL1100 Goldwing ones as they don't list anything for the silverwing. Are they that much better than stock, or is it just the looks thing?

I'm thinking 7/8' universals because the handle bars are 7/8. Grips are made with the throttle side a hair bigger to go around the throttle tube. As for are they better. I don't know. For $69.99 they better be.

According to the Kuryakyn sales people we can use #6180 which is the Goldwing grip. It is 7/8" and slightly larger on the throttle side. I do like that throttle boss.
I will look into Raddaks though, can't beat the price either.

I installed Randakk's and are VERY happy with them. They are very grippy and do seem to cut some vibration. I'll never go back to foam grips...

I also have the ones that Randakk is selling but I didn't get them from him. My local cycle shop had them for under $10. Progrip # 714. I do like them.

7/8" on the left -- 1" on the throttle
Usually 5 1/4" length, unless you are running a throttle lock. Length is usually not a problem on the left. On the throttle, measure to be sure.
The old ones can be a struggle to get off. I just cut them off with a utility knife. Drop the new ones in hot water -- not boiling, but to hot to touch.
They slide right on, then tighten up as they cool.
I'm old school -- IMO you can't beat the good old Beston GT Grips.
Did you get your endorsement? Ready to mount tires yet?

Roadster5580 I'll have to try the hot water trick some day. What I do is take a litlte bit of dish soap and put it in the inside of the grips or on the bars and it slides right in.

I used to use dish soap and other lubes. Found out the hard way that may not be the best method to use when you mount grips on a dirt bike, where you tend to "lean" on the grips more. I've used the hot water method every since the scares healed and I paid off the deductible on the e-room bill.
It's surprising the way the bike reacts in the middle of a high-speed wheelie and the left grip comes off.

I use a little dab of blue-glue (silicone). It is slick enough when wet, but helps hold them on when dry.

When I'm taking grips off or putting them on, I use compressed air. The high pressure expands the grip and lets me slide it off very easily. When I'm reinstalling them, I make sure they are super clean, rinsed out with lacquer thinner or acetone. The bars too. When I install them i just put the blower in the left side bar end first, press the throttle side in and add the air to it through the bar end while I push the grip in place. Then I do the left side, blowing air under the edge as I press it in. It's easy to adjust too if you need to move them a bit. If you want to add adhesive, put a screw driver under it and spray or brush some inside with an acid brush, and twist it around the bar at least once so it covers a thin layer all the way around and let it dry.

Roadster,
I complete my MSF class tomorrow and with some luck I will have my M endorsement all ready to go. Nothing on the tires yet, had a glitch with the hitch for wifes car and won't pick it up bike till next weekend. I haven't forgetten your generous offer though. Will let you know when I am ready to put some new rubber on.

That is a great offer, but I couldn't ask you to drive all the way to Canton to pick-up someone elses bike. I will straighten it out, just waiting on the new hitch to be delivered. I did pass my MSF class though.
