GL Main Fuse Modification Writeup
I've posted a writeup about replacing the GL main fusible link with a blade-style ATC automotive fuse
here.

Re: GL Main Fuse Modification Writeup
thanks a lot, Dave, well done.
A couple of questions:
1.: Why do this? Is the automotive blade style prefered for some reason or is the Honda link hard to come by?
2. What guage wire should I make sure the holder has?
I was about to go and buy a spare fuse before I leave for my trip and your guidance about which way to go will be appreciated,

You can grab a pack of these fuses at any quicky mart, anywhere. They require no tools to change on the road. Good write up Dave.

Re: GL Main Fuse Modification Writeup
Over the years I've had several of the Honda fusible links get brittle and crack from vibration. I always carried a spare so it was no big deal to swap it out although it did require some troubleshooting time.
One time the failure was an intermittent hairline crack that had me fooled into thinking the carbs needed attention. This happened during a road trip and I rode for a couple of days with the bike running like crap until the link finally completely failed and forced the repair. It was amazing how much better the bike ran with good solid power to the ignition!
It seems like the ATC fuses would be more reliable in a high vibration location given the way they are made. Anything that might mean more seat time as opposed to roadside repairs is always good, especially if it is simple and cheap.
There's also the possibility an intermittent short could develop somewhere in the wiring. The Honda fusible link is generally hard to obtain on the road and it could get interesting if the spare also blew.
ATC fuses are everywhere.
As far as wire size goes, the fuseholder I used had 14 gauge wire. The important thing is the fuseholder and wire should be good for at least 30 Amps continuous current.

Wayne,
You can get them at RadioShack. The holder and fuses were only a few dollars when I did my CX a month ago.
You want 30 amp fuses for the GL, though.

Re: GL Main Fuse Modification Writeup
Just picked up this easy mod.
Cost from Radio shack $5, that includes 3- 30 amp fuses for my gl650.
Fuse holder has 10 ga wire feeds.
Great write up Dave!
