What Do Y'all Wear?
Reply Quote
Just curious, what does everybody wear on their feet for riding? I want to get a decent pair of riding boots, I've been wearing some old work boots with a steel toe, but they're wicked hot and heavy. I was thinking of maybe the Tourmaster low boots, but wanted to hear some other peoples opinions first. I definitely am not looking for some boy racer, knee high boots, just something that works.

Caterpillar Steel toe work boots. Haven't owned a pair of shoes in 7 years. Before the Cats I had Mack Steel toe boots. I like to be prepared for rough roads and slimy swamps. No little girls around here. I don't work in a department store so no need for high heals.

I wear a pair similar to these,

I slid my CX just before Xmas(Diesel Patch on roundabout/light drizzle) and the boots and my Armoured jacket took most of it.Only slight bruising. No blood or breaks.
Thank god for engine protector bars!

Yeah, I friend O mine was riding in the rain, the bike slid out and one of his sneaker's lace's got caught up in it. The bike pulled his shoe right off (probably a good thing cause otherwise it would have dragged him) but his foot got crushed and he lost three toe nails and had a few broken toes. He couldn't ride for a long while after that. I know here in RI a lot of people ride in shorts, short sleeves, and sneakers, but when I think about how much pain my buddy was in after that simple slide, I don't think I'll ever put anything less than steel toes or a real pair of boots.

Not perfect but better than tennis/running shoes. My problem is that I'm a size 14. That's a big boat to fit between the peg and shifter.

decent boots will hopefully protect your feet and ankles
Sheps comments on the engine bars reminded me that I fitted mine to
protect my legs in a spill, NOT the engine.

It all depends...(I'm in the Army so I'm required to wear a certain level of Protective gear all the time, over the ankle foot wear, for one) When going to work I were my Combat Boots...Desert Jungle style, and when I'm off duty I wear an old pair of all leather Combat Boots. Work good for me, but I've never layed my bike down.

I wear the same thing I wear everywhere...Dr. Martens.  Best footwear ever made...hands down.  I own several pairs.  My everyday ones are black leather with steel caps.  Laid down a couple times, and boots and leathers definitely saved my skin.  I made the mistake of wearing short pants when I first got this bike.  Now I have a nice, permanent reminder that bare skin knees and very hot valve covers do not get along very well.

MC touring boots, always. Last year I tipped over my big Sabre while trying to turn it around on a sloped gravel drive way. It went down so fast I couldn't take my foot off the peg. So the peg folded up with my foot turned sideways between peg and motor. As I lay there pinned I could feel the engine heat creeping through my boot. After about ten minutes of rocking the bike with my right foot I got my foot out in one piece and it wasn't even smashed or cooked. Couldn't walk without a limp for 6-8 months though. Without boots I would have been in very bad shape especially since I wouldn't have been found for over 24 hours. Boots, gloves, helmet and jacket every time, every time!!

a friend of mine gave me a pair of Harley Davidson riding boots, and i wear them alll the time, even when i don't have to.

occasionally i'll wear the running shoes, but that's just for the quick run to the store for smokes.

i like to wear my heavy leather jacket, but on hot days, i go without the jacket.

once last year i did a long ride of a few hours wearing shorts and sleeveless shirt. big mistake... got sunburnt on my legs and arms something fierce!

Shoei RF1000 for a helmit and i always wear gloves. this gear got me to Canada and Back. put bags on my socks the slipped boats on in the rain. Looking for a better jacket. 3/4 maybe.

Steel toes on motorcycles are a bad idea. In the event of your foot touching down while the bike is still moving the boot can fold over and the steel toe cap can cut your toes off.

Anything with laces isn't much better - the laces can catch on something and pull your foot into it. This is particularly critical on chain drive bikes.

They should have some form of heel to keep them where they should be on the footpegs and should come high enough up your legs to protect your ankles.

Proper motorcycle boots are best - they have a re-enforced wear area where the boot contcts the ger shift and other bike specific features, but they aren't always the most comfortable for walking around.

I wear cavalry style square-toed work boots (without steel toes). They are a good compromise between comfort & protection and they are high enough that my jeans stay over their tops even with my feet on the highway pegs at 120 Km/h.

It's hotter than 2 rats banging in a wool sock around here most of the year.

Accordingly, I wear shorts, a t shirt and tennis shoes most of the year.

My brother gives me heck for it. He dresses like a commando.

Just got last year's First Gear Mesh/Leather jacket new on craigslist and it is great for hot weather; just layer up in the morning. Got full face white Shoei R200 and then on the other side I wear lace up fire-fighter's leather boots that look like logger's boots (no steel toes), but the eye-loops catch on the seat when I don't lift the right leg high enough and I ripped my nice seat twice already. I'm not very good with the Permatex vinyl repair kit, but it looks like I'll be able to practice until I get different boots. Still need to get some better pants. Looking for some zip-overs with knee pucks. Don't think I would ever wear shorts, I hardly even wear them when its hot around here and I am just hanging out around the house - life in the country (sort of) I guess.
