Sorting out things for this new cx500 owner. Just got new speedo installed and test drove the speedo. WOW, I was going faster than I thought.
Increased the tire pressure to 36-38 lbs. Seems to navigate the three miles of grooved asphalt I go thru on my way to work better. Rides harder when hitting the bumps though. What do you all run??

This raises an interesting question for me...........If the bike/ repair manual, and the tire manufacturer all list a different tire pressure, which one should you follow? I have always went with the tire manufacturer.

Tom, isn't the tire manufacturer's recommendation usually just maximum pressure?

Don't know. Who knew I was so ignorant about something as common as tire pressure (grin)? But, there it is....... I don't know. I hope somebody clears this up as me and my buddy had a disagreement about this one time. If I was wrong I would like to be able to tell him this.

mebbe i may be able to provide a lil insight here, as i usedta work/fix truck tires when i was a mite younger n stronger.
on car/trailer/truck tires, there is an area of FINE print by the "recomended" tire pressure on EVERY tire, (didn't think tires had fine print on them, eh?...lol) it will tell you the load that particular tire can SAFELY accomadate at which pressure...per example, let's say hypothetically: 540 pounds@ 60 pounds psi (pounds per square inch).....this ratring here wouldst be more like one you would see on a boat trailer tire.
as it seems the tires on these bikes are tubeless, and i do NOT know how these tires fit on the rim......like a car tire, in which the bead "pops" into its seat on the rim, or like a truck tire which is more er less "blown"(by massive volume of air at great pressure"150 er so pounds) to "bead" er seal the tire and is held there by the 100 er so pounds of air pressure to keep it in place. my "SWAG" (scientific wild-assed guess) is that these bike tires are like the aforementioned car tires and "pop" onto the rim, in which case, you could run the sucker flat and STILL not lose the seal. and if this be tha case with these tires, and you wish to run lower than than recomended tire pressure, and ya lose the bead on the tire and the sucker collaspes on a 3g turn?........"YA DIDN'T HEARS IT FROM ME"........lol

I used to run the Honda recommendations but when I switched to Metzelers, I thought I would try the recommendations on the Metzeler website which are considerably higher. Heck, I'm still pretty new at this stuff so I'm trying different things to find out for myself what works best.
I'm less concerned with a soft comfortable ride than I am with safe performance and long tire life.

The best thing to do is write the tire manufacturer and ask them.
" Hi tire guy,
I just bought your brand x tire. I have a 1981 CX500 Custom. Would you please tell me the recommened tire pressures for this bike/tire combo?
Thanks, ME"
The pressures Honda recomends are on the low side. Tires have advanced many fold since these bikes were new. What was good then may not be good now. I am running 35F and 37R. Bridgestone Battlax BT-45. I tried mine at Honda levels, the bike was unstable, tires heated up to much. Thats when I contacted Bridstone.
The way you can get close to the right levels is. The tires should raise in pressure when they heat up. Check them when cold. Ride around a little, then check them again. They should have came up about 10%. 30 cold, 33 hot. If you run a tire at lower press. it will live a short and unhappy life. If you run them higher they wear out in thew middle quicker than they should.

The Cheese is right on. Newer tires, both for cars and motorcycles, are designed to run with higher air pressure. One of the reason I have used Metzelers for years is that they respond quickly with recommendations. Back when I used Dunlops, never once got an answer,
