Pulser Stator vs Genertor Stator I'm learning
|
|
|
|

Live and learn! I knew I needed a new stator...... The dealer told me it could be replaced without pulling the engine.........
everyone else in the world (this forum is everyone else) told me no way....... engine has to come out!
I bid on a stator on e-bay $10 plus shipping ($15) lol.. anyway... then I met Rich who kindly offered to send me a stator
for just shiping, which I received today btw Rich.. thank you. I noticed immediately that the stator I got for ebay was just one small
piece, whereas the stator from Rich included that piece plus another larger donut piece...............(generator stator!)
I finally looked at the service manual and realized there is a Pulser Stator AND a Generator Stator............
The dealer obviously was quoting me the price for a pulser stator replacement, and not a generator stator replacement...
there goes the difference in labor regarding pulling the engine out.... I guess with small hands you can get the pulser stator in and out???
Anyways.............. I've learned a bunch... I found a mechanic to replace the pulser stator................ we'll see what happens.............
If all fails, I will sell it. I'm open to offers!!!!
It sure is a pretty bike and I hate to sell it!!
El Nico.......... learning the hard way!!

Are you sure you need a new stator? I read your other posts , you say that when you unhooked the 3 yellow wires the bike had spark but later when you tried this there was no spark. Did you try unhooking the kill switch wire at any time to see if that made a difference?
Rich wrote the quote below, but I did not see a reply. "The black w/white stripe wire from the CDI goes to the kill sw and
ignition. It gets grounded to stop the spark and stop the engine.
There should be a connector in that wire near the CDI, disconnect it.
If spark or running ensues, the problem is the circuit to the ignition
and kill sw. Caution, while this wire is disconnected, the engine
cannot be shut off via the usual means."
Have you gone to Rob's Fix It site?
http://www.elsham.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/cx500
Look in the drop down menu for electrical, stator testing, and R&R. Buy/borrow a multimeter, do some reading and testing and you will know more than your mechanic about these bikes. The bike looks to be in good shape, be a shame to give up on it without a fight
p.s. the bit you may or may not need to change is the "big stator" that you got from Rich, if the ebay dealer called the part you got from him a stator, he was mistaken.

Thank you Harold. I forwarded this to my guy at the shop..... I hate to give up on it too... it is such a cool bike.....
I just get frustrated because I'm not mechanically inclined, and leery to dig into it myself...... but I may just have to!
Wish one of you guys were close by!!!
Anyone in San Diego????

You have knowledge and expertise on this forum that outweighs that of virtually any other Classic Honda motorcyle maybe even any motorcycle. The cost of a set of good tools will be less than you would pay a mechanic and will most likely last you a lifetime as will the knowledge you will gain should you persevere.
I can tell you that there is no greater satisfaction than riding a bike that you have worked on yourself and no price on that.Yes you will make mistakes,we all do but we keep going until it's done.
Consider this. Some time ago a pal of mine had a Honda VFR.His,"H-box" part of the exhaust system cost more than I paid for my 2 Cxs!

Very inspiring and very well put Shep. I too am very frustated with a 79 CX500D that I've owned for 2 months and have had on the road maybe 3 times. I can't give up because I've already got too much invested and what little time I've been able to ride it I've loved it. Don't give up Nico. You have a nice looking bike. Look at it as a restoration project on a classic bike. That helps me:)

I have 30 volts on the white and blue wire now is that from the pulse stator on the back of the engine or the alternator stator inside the engine? I'm so damn confused?

"I have 30 volts on the white and blue wire"
do you mean? I have 30 volts on the white wire and 30 volts on the blue wire. The white and blue wires that plug into the cdi under the seat come from the stator inside the back cover, it has the alternator windings and the low speed(white wire) and high speed(blue wire) ignition windings on it as well. The ignition advance mechinisim is on the back of the engine cover.

Well the engine is out... wasn't as bad as I'd thought it would be.
The stator was corroded to the max..... the inside of the back cover and inside compartment looked like it had gotten wet....
The old stator gave zero reading on the multimeter... Now that the engine is out, we'll go a little farther!
btw... best recommendation for a gasket set ?

There are two types of Gasket sets.A head set and a full set.I think you only need the head set.If you can find them cheaper then do so but,

For the extras you get in the Full set it's not worth it as you can source the O-rings from a plumbers supplies way cheaper.

Twas moi.I get some 0.8mm or 1.0mm Gasket paper from local engineering company.£6/$12 for a big sheet that will make around 3 rear engine case gaskets. The middle cut out bits make Clutch/Front case ones.Engine tacho drive. A cheap set of Metric punches off Ebay for punching out the boly holes and I melted a large cheap lead fishing weight in an old apn to make a,"Last" to punch into.
I clean and degrease the surface of the component and then apply a boot black stick to them and whilst it's still wet press the component onto them. This gives me the outline and then jsut scissor them out carefully. You won't use all the gasket paper 1st time so there's savings on the next time you need to make a gasket as well and of course you don't have to pay postage or wait.
The only ones you can't make are Head gaskets but you can usually buy them seperate if you need to. Whole kit should cost around $30

Nico,
Glad to see you - getting it on. You will be one proud Poppa, when you - get-her-done. I wish you much patience and perseverance. Not to mention the power too choose which to use,
I think I paid $8-9 at Pep Boys or Auto Zone for a sheet of rubberized fiber. It is 10” x 26” x 1/32” (254mm x 660mm x 0,79mm). It was made by ROL Gaskets; RK1016. - I hope 10” is wide enough. Check that.
$6.59+ s/h: http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductDetail.aspx?MfrCode=ROL&MfrPartNumber=RK1016&CategoryCode=3540
I wish I could, but I do not remember how I traced the inside of the Spark Generator (GL and ’82 models) cover. Just that I did a good job. (I must have been in ‘the zone’), I used a spent .22 brass casing to cut the all of the bolt-holes. It didn’t work very well; I had to keep re-crimp-ing the casing. You need steel-dies to do it right.
Lead-sheet can be had at any plumber’s mart. Roof vents come to mind. Old ones being removed are the best source for cheap.
Good luck.

Well I got the back part of the engine apart... going to replace the generator stator with the one I got from Rich.
The mechanical seal behind the impeller looks good. I give up on trying to make the gaskets... gonna break down and buy the ones e-bay I guess.
I can't find the thread, but somebody on here sold entire sets that he made for like 1/2 the price...
Thank you guys for urging me to tackle this...
I'll be a proud papa when it's done!
