CX500 Not charging now, :-/

So I got the thing running on both cylinders enough to drive around. It acts up around 5k.. but that is getting better.

Last saturday I hooked my multimeter to my battery at 2500~ rpm and got a 14+ volt reading, yesterday after driving it mon/tues/wed I hooked it up not running and get a 12.2 reading, with it running and revved up I was looking at 12.7volts.

Out of hope I bought a battery, and charged it over night. I had a 12.6 reading this morning, went to work and drove home. its down around 12.2-4 reading, and running at 2500~rpm+ is still below 13volts.

What happened?! Is my stator not charging my battery? I haven't seen any diagnosing for the stator to see if the charging windings have failed or not.

Test 1:Pull the 3 Wire block off(3 yellow wires). There should be continuity between them all e.g no open circuit when you test any pair of the 3.

Test 2:Test each yellow wire from the spade connectors to the frame. There should be NO continuity to the frame e.g there should be an open cicuit.

If either of these tests fail there is a fault in the Stator. If not then the problem is elsewhere.

maybe i've had a long day.. but do you mean use the ohm setting and check between the 3 wires( I should see values on all 3), then from wire to the frame( I shouldn't get a reading?)

I assume this is with the bike not running?

That is correct. Take three measurements of the yellows wires to each other (i.e. A-B, A-C, B-C). You should have continuity on all three measurements. This tells you that none of the windings are burnt open. (The stator is really a 3-phase AC generator).

The second set of three measurements make sure that none of the windings are shorted to ground (the frame) due to the a short in the wiring (inside engine or out). This should read open circuit, same on the meter as when the leads aren't touching anything.

By the way, make these measurements with the stator disconnected from the rest of the wiring in the bike.

Hope that clears it up for you.

Well I had connectivity between all 3 yellow wires under the saddle. I had no connectivity from any of the wires to the neg post of the battery.

I hooked everything up and had it running again, I had around 6Vs coming from each yellow wire with the bike running, the battery at about 12.7volts, and the two wire connector coming off the rectifer(I think? box with fins besides batter), that goes into one wire that has an inline fuse up to the battery side of the solenoid was very warm at the plastic connector.

I am thinking the rectifier is bad? I am going to try and clean all connections, but I am a bit lost at this point.

An old and corroded fuse holder can cause bad charging.I know this from experience.

Hi,

With the block connector (three yellow cables) apart, measure AC Volts between any combination (1-2, 1-3, 2-3 and any to ground) on the alternator side. At 5000 rpm you should have around 90 V AC. If you have, you can be pretty sure the stator is OK and the problem is to find somewhere else (reg/rec, battery or corroded connectors).

Measuring AC V is the way the mechs at my nearby, very friendly Honda/Yamaha shop are dooing it. Don´t know why, but I always start with measuring resistance as in previous entries, then go on with, just to verify my findings, measuring AC Volts.

Regards

Sture
