My 1978 CX500 has always has been a little hard to shift but the last 4 or 5 weeks it has been getting progressively worse. I planed on working on the engine this winter but I might have to cut my riding season short. Any body know what the problem might be? Keep in mind I have never done anything like this before........ Thanks guys

Is your clutch completely disengaging when you pull the lever in? Does the bike want to roll forward when you are at a stop with it in gear and the clutch pulled in? Any strange noises?

Very sorry, my eye sight is not quite as good as it was and I am a tad too far away from the screen. I misread the title word shifting and wondered at the inclusion of medical problems on the forum ! As in "your shifting me" I could make no sense of the answers at first, now it all makes sense.
You can never have too many forms of personal transport.

might be a longshot, but there are some thrust washers betwen the shift shaft and the engine cases. If missing it appears as if the shift shaft assy could gouge the case and start binding. Also if too thin a case gasket could do same thing.

I do believe the clutch is disengaging. If any thing The clutch might not be engaging all the way as I am new to this and am learning how to adjust these things. I changed the oil with a quality synthetic about 400 miles ago. The only noises I hear with it in gear and the clutch lever pulled in is the tappets clacking

i have read in here someplace, that, as these bikes have a "wet" clutch (don't fret man.....until i owned this bike i had never heard of such a critter either..lol) and that some (not ALL) synthetic oils will make the clutch slip, and? maybe?..make the trans hard to shift?

Thanks for that. I am new to this and I hate to waste 7 dollar a quart oil. This synthetic oil was recommended by a reputable cycle shop here in Rockford,IL.not honda

Where is this place?I've been trying to find one for 30 years<grin> 
These bikes were not designed with synthetic oils in mind.Sorry about the $7 but try some cheap Walmart 10w40/15w 40/20w50 mineral oil.This may cure the problem and if not at least you will start on a level playing field.

seafoam is said to be helpful for freeing up and lubricating engine components. its like a high quality cleaner. try some of that in the oil or maybe some "mystery oil" (thats the actual name, works real good too).
after these though, you should do an oil flush.

Bike on side stand, front wheel straight.
Disconnect cable at both ends, you should be able to just grab it with your fingers at the lever end and move it back and forth.
If not, try lubing the cable or replace it as needed.
Reconnect both ends. Tighten the adjuster at the lever all the way in then back out 1/4".
Take up all the slack at the bottom adjuster.
Re-adjust at the lever to give about 1/8" free play.
Start up the bike and check that there is no drag when the lever is fully pulled.
If there is, check oil type and level or plan on rebuilding the clutch...

Thanks for the info. I followed your direction and it seams to work fine. I also adjusted the Valve clearances (inlet and exhaust ) also the cam chain tensioner. It is much quieter and runs great.
