Trying to remove carbs on my recent 1986 cx400c. These are Japanese market machine based on 1983 650c model. Have loosened clamp screws and removed bolts to head but dont seem to have enough room to pull front intake tubes off. Has to be simple. Or maybe its just me thats simple....
Help appreciated

Try rotating the manifold tubes while still attached to the carbs to position them away from the heads, where they can be rocked off.

What he said and try pulling the carbs upwards whilst you do this towards the frame top centre section.Don't go mad just Up-pull and twist slightly.

Different models have slightly different challenges when removing carbs. I unbolt and rotate the intake insulators like Dave does. It also lets you check the insulator o-rings while they're off. Just pulled a set off my E tonight to get it running better and more fuel efficient for the upcoming PA rally. Hmmmm, why were the jets reversed in one carb as compared to the other? That and the "jelly" in the bowls have assured me it was about time I opened these units up! I have not ridden it much yet, but was displeased with the 45 mpg it was delivering.

Over the years I've had several donor engines off Ebay and some of the things people have done wrong on them well Doh!! Cylinder head oil valves put in upside down. Carb jets reversed like yours. Cam Followers installed reversed!! Oil Filter springs and washers missing. Water pump impellor,"Braized" on over the nut!!!!
Oh well.We all do daft things :O

could you post a pic. i've never seen one of these. how hard is it to get parts for one?

Thanks for the help Dave. Have got the intake insulators, all clampsetc. free. Carbys now rattling around in the space between air box and rear engine plate. Ive tried everything to manouver then out the left side as the manual suggests but not enough room. What else do I need to do ?? It doesn't look as if removing the air box will do it either but will try that and see. All suggestions gratefully accepted.

Will post a photo as soon as it is something less than 50 or so pieces spread around my garage Dean. Only difference from the 650c is engine size hence a bit underpowered. All parts from 1983 650c have fitted and match-so far. Its a work in progress.

Finally got the sucker out- left side rather than right as indicated in the manual. Had to pull off rubber air box outlet boot to give more room. Live and learn.

I don't think anyone mentioned that.I've aways removed my carbs out through the left hand side of the bike.
Note:Get that airbox boot back in before you put the carbs in.They are a right Royal PITA to fit sometimes :O
Tip:If the boot is hard/inflexible heat it up with a Hairdryer to soften it :)

Have pulled the aforementioned PITA carbs apart- crap everywhere.
Doubt its ever been pulled down judging by the trouble I had withscrews. Thanks for tip about airbox tubes Shep.

If possible get new screws or at least hack-saw a groove into them so you can use a normal blade screwdriver with a bit more bite into them.I replace the inner most one that's hard to get to with an allen screw.This makes it easy to get the float bowls off without taking the carbs off the bike for quick easy crud removal from the bowls etc :)
